I bought a few things.
I have Pronyl OTC for dogs. It has to be done once a month for 3 months. I also bought some carpet spray as well. I know I will have to deal with the carpet and furniture.
I also have some Hartz flea and tick shampoo. Can I use that before or after the Pronyl? Or should I just use the Pronyl only?
I also bought a flea comb from Petsmart, too. Either way, I know I will have to sit outside with the dog and take out the parasites by hand.
I want to make sure I do this right the first time around.
Thanks!

(27,711 posts)We use: https://www.comfortis.com/ - which is available by prescription from our vet. It's more expensive, but it works. Since switching over from the over-the-count flea stuff we have had zero fleas on our dogs. If what your doing isn't working, you should consult with your vet, but I really don't think you're going to comb all the fleas off your dog.

(31,011 posts)She said that the Pronyl is okay for temporary relief and that's it. I know a reasonably priced vet in town so I think I will take him in after the holidays.
Thanks for the advice.

(2,480 posts)I never have to treat the house or yard. I live in s. texas and used to have fleas until started using Comfortis.
When I did use Frontline, I used a larger dose than what was stated on package. for example - use 40 lb dose on 20 lb dog.
A vet gave me this information. He said otherwise it would not work.
I also have 7 cats. They are on Assurity - feline form of Comfortis.
Yes it gets expensive, but during colder months, I only dose every other month.

(28,791 posts)especially mint. Pots are great for this cause mint will spread like crazy. yank a handful of leaves off and rub em all over the pooch. non-toxic for him too.
here's a good link with info on other plants that work well..

(47,675 posts)I've never found the carpet spray to be effective, but the powder works well. A flea comb is sort of a waste of time because it really won't get the eggs out. The "back of the neck" tube is systemic so anything that bites will die. The carpet powder kills the larva. Between the two you should be fine and without spending that much.

(11,065 posts)It's a bit of a pain in the butt, but it kills them all and there nasty eggs all over the house. Fleas in the house are ALL OVER the house. It's just a waste of money to treat a few areas since it's not going to kill them all. You need to evict them ALL or you'll just continue this battle on and on and on.
Don't overload on flea killing products on the dog. Yes, they can OD on too much of the chemicals. Bathe the dog first in Dawn dish detergent, comb out what you can with the flea comb, when the dog is dry, put on the monthly preventer and then bomb the whole house with foggers that say they kill fleas AND their eggs and get enough of them to do the whole square footage of your house. ALL the fleas and their eggs will then be evicted, and then you just have to keep up with the flea and tick monthly preventative on the dog and on any other pets you may have.
It's truly frightening what ONE single female flea in the house can create and in just days.

(31,011 posts)Used a comb on him outside. Then I waited until he was completely dry and used the Pronyl. I put some carpet stuff down and vacuumed the furniture. Our clothes and whatnot are in the washer.
I'll repeat the shampoo in a week or so and next month do another Pronyl treatment.
He's got a vet appointment next week.

(11,065 posts)The vet's office is a prime place to pick up the creepies no matter how hard they try keeping the place sterilized. I'm absolutely amazed how some pet owners don't care a fig if their pets are crawling with fleas and don't care about infesting the places they go and other animals they run into.
The only two times I got a flea infestation was twice I went to someone's house (two different homes) that until it was already too late I found they were horribly infested with fleas. No matter how much I shook my clothes out outside and threw everything in the washer, I must have missed a few of the nasty cretins on me somewhere. I even had to use a fogger in my car since no doubt they traveled with me. Both times this happened within DAYS my place was infested with them though they stayed away from the dog since he was protected with the Frontline. Had to do the foggers to evict them all. It's just unbelievable that people can have their homes so infested with fleas you can see them jumping around on the carpet and crawling all over their pets yet they're oblivious. GROSS! For every single flea you see there are hundreds more you aren't seeing. The one guy had a golden retriever, and the poor thing had at least 20 fleas that I saw running all over just the top of his head! YUCK!
Since then I'm always really careful what dogs mine interacts with and that I don't go to anyone's house that doesn't care about being infested with fleas.

(72,381 posts)amt needed for kittehs of our size. I am very happy with it so far. I couldn't believe all the fleas that fell off of them on the first day. Now we are going through the hatching of the last eggs. I still see fleas on the cats, but they are tiny and there is nor flea dirt, so I don't think they last long.

(2,480 posts)The dog comfortis is in pill form. Much easier to use liquid on cats instead of a pill.

(717 posts)We had fleas, some how they got in our apartment and onto our 3 indoor cats. The food grade is very safe. I liked it for the rugs. What you do is spread it over the carpets and rugs, leave it there overnight at least then vacuum it up (put some in the vacuum bag too) it kills the adult fleas. If you do this a few times it will really help get rid of the little buggers. Vacuum every day too. Don't worry if it gets on the pets, totally safe and it will kill the ones on the animals coat.
