I'm feeling very sober this Saturday evening.

Normally I'd be posting a drinking thread or a trippy music thread. But I'm on a diet and an easy way to cut about 1800 calories a week is to abstain from that twelve pack I drink every weekend. That's a half a pound a week just by itself!

So to recap for those who haven't been following my journey into a more healthy and less pleasurable existence, I've quit smoking, quit drinking, stopped eating out except for special occasions, quit drinking Diet Coke unless I'm eating out, and have cut about half the calories I used consume every day. Quitting the cigs and the Diet Coke and the eating out was about money initially, but I also feel a hell of better now that I don't do that stuff. But I really need to lose a lot of weight now so out with the beer and in with the Vitamin Water; out with the pizza and in with the oatmeal.

Today was a special day, though, so Jen and I went out to eat. I still did pretty good for a fancy meal: grilled shrimp and steamed crab legs with a salad. On Monday we will have been married a year and we decided to celebrate today while we had time. And all of that stuff I've been doing getting healthy and all? It's because of Jen. She makes me want to be a better person. Without her I'd drink myself into oblivion every chance I got and be smoking two packs a day while surviving on Big Macs. I'd probably be dead before I hit 60 going that route.

Happy Anniversary, Jen.

enjoy... and just a tip... Vitamin Water is not a good choice ...it is glorified sugar water, 150 cal a bottle... about the same as a good Sam Adams beer (I'd choose the beer but better to just drink lemon water)

((chamomile tea is mighty good))

And congrats on the lifestyle changes. You'll thank yourself. I didn't get really serious about any of that until I was in my 40's or so. Good job!

You know, drinking just plain old water is highly, highly under rated.

Same thing with eating. After so much oatmeal you have to have crab legs.

We went and got married the day before Prop. 8 was voted in (and the President) after being together since '75.
(Figured we should do it while it was still legal.)

Best wishes with the diet and all,

Good for you!!! Grilled shrimp and crab legs -- I gotta get out for summa THAT!!!i

I wouldn't go completely dry on the beer. I'd do the same thing as with the food --
let loose for a "special" occasion every once in a great while.

It's actually good for the spirit -- and you want don't want to neglect THAT by
focusing TOO much on the corporeal side of life.

Alcohol is a great thing to give up, for lost of reasons. And I know you two want to be three sometime and little ones need healthy parents to take care of them.

Find some fun stuff that you really like that's not caloric and be patient. It takes a while to break a habit and it's not unusual to be a little antsy while you're doing it.

Take care, you two, and dHappy Anniversary.

I'm late to this thread again. Sorry, I've been busy.

One comment via the dietician -- take it for what you will -- she feels that artificial sweeteners promote overeating and a desire to consume simple carbs/sugars. I've heard others take that view, as well.

However, according to her, Stevia extract, which is now sold under a brand name, Truvia, and products sweetened with it don't have that issue.

Sobe Life Water is very similar to Vitamin Water, but I know it's sweetened with Stevia. I don't know about Vitamin Water, haven't check it out, drink it from time to time when I grab it at a checkout or gas station.

And again, Congrats on the Anniversary and finding a great woman to whip you into shape and make you tow the line.

I drink wine and smoke. I am 73 and hope to make to 83. Do not cut out whatever makes you happy. But I have learned abstaining from fatty foods and desserts keeps my weight down.
