Need recommendations for sound bars. My new TV has a great picture but the audio totally sucks.

I do have a home theater system, but I only fire it up when I want to freak out the pigeons on the roof. Any suggestions are sincerely appreciated.

a Bose to go with it because although the pic was rated by consumers as superior, the audio was not.
All we ever use is the Bose. We have friends that drive 35 minutes to watch our favorite shows together
because they love the sound.

That purchase was back in 2007 though. My techno geek son says there are better options.
We still love it though.

4. Dude. The sound bars suck. Radio Shack has about 6" speakers that kick ass.

Yes, I said Radio Shack. I've got them as the exclusive sound system in the living room (theater, if you will), in the garage, outside, and a pair I haven't installed in the basement yet (still trying to figure out how to run the wires). They're small but they kick ass!!! And they don't bounce the needle on the turntable either. I run the DVD, LaserDisc, and VCR through the TV and bounce the sound back out to the amp. That also lets me use the equalizer. They cost next to nothing compared to Bose or other "high end" stuff, but the sound is easily as good if not better. My step-dad is all Bose and he's had three of those thing they advertise all the time die on him. He still keeps buying more of them. My shit's old and still works.

Now, that said, I still own my first pair of "REAL" speakers - 1982 Genesis Physics Lab 100W cabinet speakers with a 12" woofer and a 1" ferrofluid tweeter. Lifetime warranty. Unfortunately, that warranty expired when GPL went tits up in the mid 90's. I blew out the woofers about five years ago. The things are the size of a standard bar band speaker (of which I own two). The Radio Shack ones are smaller than a tissue box and produce about the same results - including bass. I'm not sure how, but they do.

The sound bar fad isn't long for the world. It has no bass and little if any adjustment in stereo projection. Even outside I can tilt the speakers (individually) to get stereo projection wherever we are. I've got a 27" monitor (HP 2709m) on the main server and it has speakers. I don't use them. I've got an old set of Creative speakers hooked into the server directly because they have better sound. They also have a headset jack, which is a nice touch when you want to watch "The Wall" at really high volume (and I've got the entire movie in one YouTube download - no shit).

So fuck the sound bar. Get a nice pair of speakers and let the stereo do the rest. The amp and equalizer do wonders that no TV can hope to produce.

6. I read you. I have some old bookshelf JTS speakers that would be great. Unfortunately, unlike older

TVs I've owned, this one has no external speaker connections. The only audio outs are a digital optical and 3.5mm headphone jacks. So unless I want to get an auxiliary receiver I'm stuck with a sound bar.

11. You can get a headphone jack to RCA jacks splitter at Radio Shack.

You'll probably want to pick up a 3.5mm extension cord too. Sometimes you have to get creative, but (using two A/B switches and an 8-way output switch), I've got the following all connected into the same sound system and TV (when applicable):

Amp (of course)
Equalizer
Receiver
Dual cassette deck
DVD/VCR with dubbing
VCR
DVD
6-CD Magazine changer
LaserDisc player
Turntable
Indoor, garage, and outside speakers all independently switched.

The wiring diagram is a clusterfuck, but it all works.

On edit: Our TV has inputs for ColorStream (DVDs and LaserDisc use that), Cable/broadcast channels, Video 1, Video 2, and Video 3 and it has output for stereo sound. It's also a 27" tube set, not a flat screen. What's freaky is that I've got more real estate on my server - 27" flat screen (wide format) and a 19" secondary flat screen. I could use a few more, but I don't have the room or extra video cards. Programming eats a LOT of screen space!!!

7. my only soundbar experience

boston acoustics

got it to go with my new sharp led (no complaints there, except i can't turn the speakers off if i need to), which is so thin i knew the sound would be wanting.

i can. not. get. the soundbar to sync with my remote control. after repeatedly trying. then to reset the settings you have to uplug the unit (there is no off) for 48 hours. tried that multiple times.

i checked out their website only to find that the one i bought was no longer supported. all they had was a faq page.

the sound is okay, but now i have yet another remote to deal with.

overall, a waste of $200.

he could give you some advice. He is the best in the business.

look around his site and see if you could use some of his products, or if they're applicable to your needs.
