and five months old now, which is my record for the longest.
(any of you who've had parrots will beat the rest of us on this )

(46,179 posts)or animals in my family?
33 would be the the longest in the family; birth to death for a horse.
My mom's cat died last year at 19.
I've got a 23 yo horse I've had since her birth outside in the barn. She's healthy and energetic, and I expect her to make at least 30.
I've also got an 8 yo hen, but the record for hens for me is 12.

(12,154 posts)Our shih tzu, Flower Lou, lived a few months past his 15th birthday, and if his "sister," Fritty Sue, a bichon, had lived two weeks longer than she did, she would have been 16.
We adopted them a day apart when they were each about six weeks old.

(9,808 posts)DH got them as kittens. They've been half mine for almost 13 years. My long-lived girly-girl car was 18 when she went in 2005. I'd had her for 11 years.

(19,288 posts)Ralph is hmmm? Born the same day my dad died in '98, I count 14 years. She is still going strong. Her brother Bob, did not last as long. He caught the feline aides virus because he was a fighter and a killer cat. He was SO bad.
I've told his stories here.

Hi,
Had Fergie (Named after Ferguson Jenkins, Cubs pitcher) for 19 years. Had some problems once she had a stroke in her older age, but recovered amazingly well and lived good for another few years. Eventually had to put her to sleep. It took me almost two years before I felt like getting another cat. Sophie is now 11.
Peace

Just passed away in his sleep.
I had bottle feed him, he was a sweet cat,
He was a great foster dad.
I had a cat that had 4 week or kittens when she was killed.
Tuna took care of the kittens after that.
I miss him.

(1,573 posts)...and she was a very special girl. She adopted me in my early 20's right after my best friend committed suicide (which was less than three years after my mother died unexpectedly) and I was contemplating following suit. I feel like caring about her is what saved me from myself.

(961 posts)My golden retriever, Gwyn. Met his parents the day he was conceived and brought him home at 8 weeks of age. We traveled all over the country together. I think he spent more time living from the back of my jeep then in any home. We had a great run together and made friends in many states and of many species...cats, dogs, ferrets, Guinea pigs, parrots, chickens...humans! Best companion I have ever had. Miss him dearly...even after 3 years!
When we lived in DC, I would walk him at night after work. We would go to a neighborhood park at midnight to play fetch and do his business. We used a red ball that would flash when it was impacted. It took me about a week to realize he was placing it intentionally next to his waste as a flashing beacon, allowing me to find it quickly in the dark and we could get back to play time faster!
He was very smart. He knew commands in ASL as well as spoken english. His final years were spent in Portland, OR. He could see the dog park on the next block from our second floor apartment door and when he choose to escape the back yard, that is where he went!
He was such a "Good boy!"

(5,352 posts)We adopted her from the local Humane Society after someone stuffed her in a bag, set the bag on fire, and tossed the bag in a dumpster. (I convinced my parents we should adopt her after hearing her story. I'm a light touch, I suppose. ) She was missing about 4 inches from the end of her tail and still had a tiny bald spot there when we brought her home.
Naturally, after a beginning like that, she didn't trust people much but I'd drag her out from under my bed every day when I got home from school to pet her, play with her, and generally get her used to the idea that not all humans would want to hurt her. She gradually warmed up to the family, but she was really my cat. Just thinking about that dear kitty puts a smile on my face. She really was a sweetheart.
Edit: spelling
