I have some virgin olive oil and the recipe for the brownies (in a box) I'm making calls for oil and I don't have any. What do you think??

(29,098 posts)Better to substitute melted butter if you have that. The brownies will be OK with the olive oil just a little off tasting

(11,363 posts)... your brownies will taste way better than they would have with oil. If you use oil next time, you will notice that they are just not as good as the last batch.

(47,675 posts)It has a really strong flavor. Canola (rapeseed) and corn oils work better. Vegetable oil is basically soy. Sesame and olive oil are not good substitutes in most baking scenarios. They're more frying oils.

(36,827 posts)Virgin or extra virgin olive oil will make for olive flavored brownies which just seems wrong somehow.
I keep two types of cooking oil on hand at all times which are extra virgin olive oil and light olive oil. I use EVOO for salads and dishes where I want to taste the flavor oil. As such I buy a good grade of EVOO that's more expensive. I use light olive oil for sauteing and frying and pretty much anything else that would normally call for vegetable oil.
