The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsMy friends started a website where you can help me beat my cancer.
As many of you know, I was diagnosed with stage 3 rectal cancer over a year ago. I got a bunch of chemo, very aggressive surgery and radiation, and was pronounced cancer free in July of this year. However, since then, the cancer has come back...metastatic. It seems to have spread to my lungs and chest lymph nodes.
Now, I'm a pretty proud guy and I hate asking for help, especially when I know how many people are suffering out there. I am very lucky that I live in Canada and that many of my needs and treatments are covered by out health system. With that said, I'm also in a real tight spot. Because I was going to university and I am so young, I don't have access to a lot of sources of income others might. I can't get disability unless I quit school (something I don't want to do, even if I don't live long enough to finish), nor can I get EI or live off savings/retirement that I don't have. I'm only 33...my somewhat even tiny nest egg has already been vanquished.
Here is a copy to my blog where you can learn about what I've been through

And here is the page my friends started in order to do some fundraising so that I can concentrate on school, beating cancer, and maybe even take a small trip in the summer some time

I don't want you guys to feel like you HAVE to contribute....things are tough, but my friends and family are helping me as best they can. Hopefully, this latest batch of chemo won't be so bad and I might be able to work a little. However, if you have millions of dollars burning a hole in your pocket and want to give a not-to-proud to accept help DUer a hand up, I would appreciate it. Even more, I would appreciate any emotional and psychological support you can offer. A big shout out to TAD, Argula latte, and my other cancer support group peeps. Share your stories with me....in a lot of ways, survivor stories are worth so much more than money.
Thank you.

I have had many friends and family with various forms of cancer, and they're all still here. Someone who had two bouts 10 years apart was told that treatments have progressed so much in the past decade that they wouldn't do now what they did then for her (not exactly comforting, but you get the gist - huge steps are made daily in cancer treatment).
I'll be pulling for you. You are young and strong.

(8,040 posts)I'm not doing so financially great myself, but I know there are people way worse of than I am. Those who can help, I appreciate, but even a message or a kick means a lot to me. Thanks Trof.
