The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsSo I am watching this show Revolution on NBC...
It's all about a post apocalyptic event where all the energy is shut off. There is a lot of holes in the system, but it's a good premise and I thought it would at least be entertaining.
And it has been, for the most part. The acting is pretty iffy in some places and the writing is comic book like which is okay by me because I still buy comic books now and then.
But what gets to me is all these women that are running around scrounging for food and dignity and shelter and still have found the time to shave their arm pits. Now every other part of their bodies are smudged and dirty and their hair is unkempt but we are supposed to believe that women in this situation would be willing to take all that the primitive trappings throw at them and yet they insist on taking time out to make sure that their underarms are hairless.
And then there is the white teeth thing, not just white but blindingly white teeth. But I will allow for that.
I'm sure they could make up some fake arm pit hair or better yet, wear shirts with arms instead of the tank top style of T-shirts so it wouldn't be an issue.

(2,770 posts)All resemblance to real persons, living or dead, is purely superficial.
I love the show, and the fact that I take no notice of arm-pit hair - or pretty much anything else that rings untrue, or downright ridiculous - is a testament to its entertainment value.

I'm just pointing out where the line is draw.

(1,259 posts)I noticed nobody's missing any teeth, even the people over 40. My ex gf used to be a makeup artist it's pretty easy to create the illusion of a missing tooth.

(102,328 posts)pretty unconvincing.
Nonetheless, given how few scripted, non-(ridiculous) sitcoms there are on tv, now, it seems about the best network tv can come up with outside the classical drama realm--and I'll keep hoping the two lead characters (Miles and Charlie) somehow become less the one-note, single dimensional wonders we've seen to date.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)The woman playing Charlie seems to be a whiny crybaby - Miles doesn't want to do something and she makes faces, pouts, tears well up in her eyes, and then Miles changes his mind.
However, they're supposed to be using Star Wars as a model, with Charlie as Luke Skywalker and Miles as (I guess) Han Solo. And, Luke was kind of a whiny punk in the first movie.
And, actually, the perfect white teeth bothers me more than armpit hair. Men have been shaving for thousands of years before electricity, so I don't see why at least some women wouldn't continue to shave their armpits. However, unless fluoride toothpaste has a shelf life of 15+ years, it would seem society would quickly revert back to one where dental problems are a major cause of health problems and death.

(8,352 posts)I enjoy Science Fiction, even admittedly bad Science Fiction.
There are just too many inconsistencies with the plot. The acting is horrible, especially Charlie. When I involuntarily yelled out yay when she was shot in the last episode and was disappointed she wasn't dead, I knew there was a problem with the show. Miles' character is far more interesting. There is an entire back-story to him that gives his character a true redemption motif. Charlie was a baby when the power went out. She is still a child, acts like a petulant child, and yet she is hailed as some sort of hero.
I enjoy comics but this show is written less like a comic and more like an RPG video game. Every episode our intrepid party must achieve a small goal or side-quest in their overall big quest of stopping Monroe & saving the brother. At the end of each episode, a new mini boss is fought and usually defeated. The big boss is Monroe at the end of the game.
I will give it a few more episodes, but right now it is looking like I won't waste more time on watching it.

(56,828 posts)10 episodes in the fall, and then 10 more in the Spring. The ratings were really good out of the box, so it was already picked up for the second half of the season. Not sure about Season 2 decisions, though.
I like it better than Terra Nova last year, and I'll give Charlie a chance to become more than a female Luke Skywalker, who was also a whiny petulant punk in the first Star Wars movie.
I am frankly shocked that the ratings are so high when other shows like 666 & The Last Resort are already cancelled.
I enjoyed Terra Nova in part because the story had fewer plot holes and missteps.
See, that is part of my problem. We don't need a female copy of Luke Skywalker. It was done. Do something else. Do something with more originality. Even if Charlie's character is allowed to out-grow the petulance, I just don't think the actress can pull it off. Her strained emotional facial expressions are just too much sometimes.

(48,217 posts)the bad acting and the overly well-groomed and white toothed actors.
1. The really interesting story would have been how the country adjusted to the lack of electricity. Note that they are within walking distance of Chicago. This means that they have a real winter. How did they avoid freezing to death? What did they eat? In one scene, a man comes to his front door with a cup of coffee. Have they all installed wood stoves?
2. The show features one of the hallmarks of intellectually bankrupt writing: a fight every few minutes, one that the "good guys" always win, with the rest of the story leading up to yet another fight. Yawn.
3. Note the right-wing subtext: a racially mixed man is head of a dictatorial government and is determined to confiscate GUNS.

(8,352 posts)I totally agree on your 1st and 2nd points.
I had not even noticed the 3rd one but now that you mention it, it does seem a bit over-the-top doesn't it?!

Then got sick and now I watch TV, mostly movies, and read books.
That's a great analogy to the game themes.

(191 posts)For some reason I am just completely uninterested in it. I will pass along the comments I've read here and ask him if he has the same problems. Usually he's the first one to complain about something in a movie not being realistic, but he hasn't made any such comments about this show.

NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)just a guess.
Yavin4
(35,445 posts)Plenty of bikes and tires around.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)car tires, bike tires, etc. Without being maintained, they'll degrade. Even a properly stored bike's tires won't last forever. In ideal conditions, it's about 5 years, and I doubt the local bike shop is going to take time to properly store all their bikes once the power goes out. Bike tires typically last only a fraction of the time that car tires last - a quick google search has well maintained high end bike tires last 2,000 to 3,000 miles, and lower end ones half that or less.

Yavin4
(35,445 posts)There are spare tires all around. You can patch a tire, etc.
NewJeffCT
(56,828 posts)because the rubber is too degraded to be useable after 5 years, it won't matter if you can't patch the tire.
Yavin4
(35,445 posts)Here's what you do. You get a big wagon. In this wagon, you store spare bikes, spare bike parts, and other survival stuff. Hitch the wagon to your bike, and away you go. When you need additional parts, you take what you need.
Beats walking or riding horses.
if the rubber tire - used or unused - degrades after 5 years, even when stored under ideal conditions and not used, there aren't going to be any useable tires in 15 years.
WCGreen
(45,558 posts)You also can set up forges to build and repair stuff.
It's suppose to be 15 years in the future.

(6,801 posts)the men are at most have missed a few days shaving. Everyone has clearly had plenty of food and sleep. No evidence of the communicable diseases and parasites that would run rampant after sanitation and order disappear.
Women are shaved as you say and wearing makeup, dressed nice but with the occasional smudge or rip in their clothes.
It'd be more like a refugee camp. Not a lot of vanity mirrors there.
I think the mad max genre did a bit better on this regard. Or 28 days later.
