Something about their singing just conveys so much feeling. To me, anyway.

with good timbre and tone and none of that vibrato, sitting-on-a-washer-during-the-spin-cycle effect that a lot of 'singers' employ, thinking it makes them sound better.

That's a trend that desperately needs to die, imo. Really great singers can (or at least should be able to) sound great without all that other needless embellishment. Sam Cooke alone is a perfect argument for that, even without adding Orbison and Cline to the list.
