Someone explain to me why cats get elevator butt???!!!

My one cat when it goes up it does not come down until you remove your hand

for those who don't know what elevator butt in a cat means

It happens whenever I happen to be trying to pay attention to something other than the cat; the kitty butt immediately is up and in my face, blocking my view all all but the furry butt, with tail tapping gently on eyes and mouth.
