No, I don't care about the probability of picking a queen or an ace out of a deck of cards or the odds of getting two heads in a row if I flip a coin three times. Somebody please shoot me now!

(683 posts)Took me 3 times to pass College Algebra in undergrad--- I literally can't believe I just passed Stats.
I went back to school years after I graduated high school and I still wanted to answer the question with "Nobody Cares"
I did answer a few physics questions like that once. Doesn't help your grade much of course.
I am so glad I only needed one stats class. There are others of us that feel your pain, Good Luck.

(27,677 posts)will it take, on average, before rolling box-cars?
Brigid
(17,621 posts)1 in 36.

(6,107 posts)not how many rolls it would take. Sorry.
See, I toldja I wasn't any good at this!

(27,677 posts)less than 36.
Other than that, I got nothing.

(27,677 posts)Your first answer 1/36 was the correct probability of rolling 6-6 on a single roll. So what's the likelihood of not rolling 6-6? What are the odds of not rolling 6-6 twice in a roll? Three times? Go from there.
on what type of dice you're using. Can't get two sixes on a four-sided die (though you may have to get six stitches if you step on them...)

(28,394 posts)All those hours of struggling through advanced math classes were for naught. I never used or will use any of that "knowledge". I don't even remember my times tables sometimes.
That is why someone invented the calculator, IMO.

(2,135 posts)I was never any good at it in school, and I had to resort to hoping that I passed instead of getting a good grade. I was so bad at the more advanced stuff that I had to take College Algebra I about four times before getting full credit for it (three at JC in order to graduate, but it wouldn't transfer to a four year and I had to retake it)

(35,445 posts)I understand Algebra, Calculus, and Stats, but why Geometry? I suck at Geometry. The GMAT for B-School had Geometry on it. Why? I never used Geometry in B-school. Don't need it programming as well.

So, odds are, you probably don't want to know how to figure your chances of being shot now?

(10,418 posts)If I get an 83% on the test I'll need an 80% on the final next week to get an 'A' for the course. Then I am done with math except for a statistics course.
Odds of drawing a queen out of a 52 card deck 4/52. 52 total cards 4 total queens. # in sample space equals 52. # in event equals 4. Probability of event equals # in event divided by # in sample space.
Odds of flipping two heads in a row flipping a coin three time are 2/6. Possible outcomes are S = {(HHH), (HTT), (THH), (THT), (TTH), (TTT)} Two outcomes meet the criteria E = {(THH),(HHH)}. There are 6 possible outcomes. Probability is n(E)/n(S) = 2/6.

(21,020 posts)math moron here.
I hate it...always have.
Seeing numbers of any kind makes my brain short circuit and shut off. Math problems may as well just be written in some obscure foreign language.
I would say my math proficiency level is probably 5th grade or lower.

(4,062 posts)"It will or it won't" DOES NOT mean 50-50 odds (look at 2:20 for a TEACHER getting this stuff embarrassingly wrong)....and guess what we're all still here.
Good public policy involves data and data involves statistics/probability. If you don't have a feel for "cards and coins" you'll have to trust others who quote numbers at you and many of them are going to have reasons to want to mislead you.

(11,924 posts)I can do it if I have to, but "blech"! Both of my kids love math and were/are in advanced levels (they're in college and middle school). I had to get a tutor for our oldest because Mom and Dad couldn't help her with HS calculus and trig. Our youngest just started high school math this year -- except he's only in 7th grade. It's great and it means he's doing a lot of it on his own and still understanding it. He's also in the math league. We're very proud of him, but when he comes to me with a question, I spend hours researching it on line and trying to learn stuff I never had to learn in the first place.
We have a deal with our daughter, if she helps her brother with his stats when Mom and Dad can't get the answer (and as long as it's not interfering with her study time), then she get's her full babysitting rate.
Oh, and my first job out of college was as an accounting/payroll clerk at a car dealership! Go figure....
