Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsAs a member of the crew, would you rather have Kirk or Picard as your captain?
This is not about whether which show was better or which actor was better. This is a about the leadership skills of Kirk vs. Picard.
So, which captain would you rather serve under as a crew member?
For me, it's Picard, hands down. Kirk had self control issues, and I don't want to be in deep outer space with a horn dog at the helm.

(6,581 posts)Jean Luc Picard, smart, sensitive, compassionate. Kirk, well, an idiot with power. Might be interesting to see how Denny Crane would run a starship, probably like he ran a law firm, with hookers, booze, and a penchant to shoot first and ask questions later.

(9,230 posts)I think Kirk was far less rigid to code and respected, valued the individual's contribution. Building teams is hard. Codes of conduct are just crutches.

I don't mind a horn dog at the helm, I just think Piccard would not take as much dumb risks.

(21,925 posts)compared to Kirk, who was a swashbuckling hero who knew no fear and had the ability to improvise. Although I liked both, Kirk would be my choice, especially if one day the entire crew decided to go rogue and become pirates.

(1,259 posts)kirk made his own rules which not always good in a military situation. Picard was more of a diplomat than a captain. Sisko was more military he obeyed orders yet he knew how to bend the rules a little bit for the sake of the mission.

Going rounds with the Klingons: Kirk
Both are good at either job, but sometimes cool is called for, sometimes the crazy.

(12,723 posts)I would prefer Picard but I hate the Next Gen concept of drinking synthetic alcohol that does not get you inebriated.
I would prefer the more exciting dynamic universe of Kirk's days but that man was a bit of a loose cannon.

(78,249 posts)Higher crew life expectancy, for one thing. Also, no rug.
This was the issue that kept TNG from catching on for a while. Hard-core Trekkers couldn't deal at first with anyone but James Tiberius Kirk as "their" captain. Srsly.
Picard seems to have a stick up his ass.

(33,688 posts)Picard is a master diplomat as well as being an immensely skilled warrior. Picard never loses his cool or puts the lives of his crew at unnecessary risk to satisfy his own ego.
Jean-Luc Picard is the epitome of what a Starfleet officer should be and his second-in-command is very nearly his equal.
