It's a 4-year-old neutered male beagle/basset hound mix, about 35 pounds. For now, he's spending most of its time in a wire kennel in our living room. One of the cats has introduced itself to him, without any hissing or barking. The other cat has not made an appearance. The friendly cat went into my wife's office, so we closed the door and let the dog explore the rest of the house off leash. The other cat knows many hiding places, and was not seen so far. The dog's name is now officially Dude.
Once he has seen the cats a few more times without incident, he will get the run of the house. In the meantime, he's in and out of the kennel on a leash He's house trained, not too excitable, and seems willing to deal with our two cats without chasing or other obnoxious behavior.
He's been walked three times outdoors, and has peed and pooped.
It's all looking good, so far. Tomorrow, he gets introduced to some individual obedience training, but he seems to already know some basics. He was a stray when he came to the shelter.
Ask me anything.

(10,418 posts)Two cats and a dog. We got one cat and the dog from a shelter. The other cat just wandered in the house one day and has been here since then.
If you are just looking for a pet and don't have a need for a specific breed, I think more people should try to find their pets at the shelter. We love our animals and they are good pets.

(146,317 posts)We didn't have time today. We were busy getting him settled in. He seems happy in the wire kennel. He settles right down and naps. He's also happy to come out and head out for a walk. Stands there calmly while we leash him. Outside, he's full of energy and sniffing everything in sight.
I think this is going to be a very good dog. He has an interesting bark, though, as you'd expect from a beagle/basset cross. But he hasn't barked once inside the house, even when our cat walked up to the kennel. They just sniffed noses, and the cat wandered off, bored. I think they'll get along OK. The other cat, I don't know. But it'll stay out of sight until she's ready to introduce herself.

(5,946 posts)I was thinking next time I should get some beagle mix, they are such sweet dogs. had one as a child.
The dog is lucky, most strays don't live long if it is not a no kill shelter, the voluntary ones don't accept strays either, they want a history.
I hope you all enjoy the bestest holidays.

(146,317 posts)They handle strays, and all of their dogs have shots, are microchipped, and carefully evaluated before adoption. My wife volunteers there, and fell in love.

(5,946 posts)For some reason they always gave me large dogs and young girls got the cute little ones.
I fell in love with one unadoptable dog and they let me take him out to play with in the yard without a leash, a week later he was adopted because he was so lovable. Hope I helped with training him to not bite (really affectionate nibbles). It is so easy to fall in love at a shelter.

(3,344 posts)We adopted a red GSD puppy (10) months from the shelter a couple of months ago. He was supposed to be Strider since we have a Ranger but the puppy follows Ranger around so his name is Shadow.
They found Shadow on the streets. He now loves his home, bed, toys.... but especially the other two dogs and his humans. He has now decided the Christmas tree isn't a monster and that mom doesn't spill stuff even when he walks in between her legs.
Most all of the dogs I have ever been privileged to own have been rescue.

(1,588 posts)I have had rescues or shelter dogs all of my adult life- sometimes 3 at a time- and I consider myself lucky. The bond I've had with those dogs cannot be explained. I love them all. They gave me more than I ever gave them. I have two right now. They are everything to me.

(205,530 posts)Sounds like a great dog and that he'll be a great companion and a lot of fun. I also have adopted rescue dogs, though mine have been senior dogs. I have never once been disappointed. My sweet Sara, a terrier mix, was also found as a stray, turned out to have a wonderful temperament and got along with everyone, very friendly.
My question is when are you going to share pix?
Here's my Sara

(12,022 posts)This is the luckiest thing, an adult critter being adopted! I wish everyone would do this instead or making new kittens and puppies, sooooo many animals are being euthanized every day, it's just sad and terrible.
Dude's beautiful!!

(146,317 posts)In the house, he's quiet. I think the previous owners helped with that.
Today, he got his first obedience training on a leash. He quickly got Stop! and Sit!. When we started, he didn't get either one, but after a very brief demonstration, he did fine. Stop! has him turning back and returning immediately to me (treats), and Sit! gets his butt on the ground, whatever he's doing. It was very easy, which makes me think he's been through some training before. He seems smart and gets the lesson quickly. Tomorrow, we'll reinforce those two commands and start on Stay! Looks to me like a week of daily work and he'll be pretty good.
When I brought him back in the house, still on the leash, he encountered one of our two cats, face to face for the first time. I said Stop!, and he looked up for a treat. Then, with the cat two feet from him, I said Sit! he promptly sat, and the two looked at each other. No hissing, no lunging, no problem. He's back in the kennel now, but we're about to shut doors on the cats, and give him the run of the house for awhile, so he can sniff everything to his heart's content.

(146,317 posts)He's getting his first chance to run loose in the house this afternoon. The kitties were napping in a couple of rooms, so I closed the doors and let Dude out of his kennel. He promptly found one of the squeaky chew toys my wife picked up today for him, and is happily carrying it around and bringing it up to show me as I sit at my desk.
More opportunities to reinforce the Sit and Stop commands and to learn a new one, which is Drop it. Since he can't take a treat with a chew toy in his mouth, he learned that one quickly, too. We're making good progress, and he has shown no interest in chasing the cats at all. It may well be that there were cats in his previous home, since he just stops and looks at them.
I had him on a short leash earlier, and introduced him to one of the cats - the one that's not really much afraid of dogs. They looked at each other from a couple of feet apart, and I got Dude to Sit while that was going on. We're not going to let him have unleashed access to the cats for awhile, yet, and I want the Stop command to be obeyed 100% of the time before we start that experiment.
The cats already know the house, and have many hiding and escape places, so it's all going to work out. But, I expect some time to pass before they all co-exist peacefully and without drama. It'll happen, though.
Obedience training is the first order of business, though.

(11,862 posts)when he was with the cats...he never even seemed to care about the cats..and in less than 2 weeks he roamed the home cats and all...NEVER a confrontation between the species...
I had to put him down 10 years after I adopted him
His favorite pastime was riding in the car..and on his last day of life we drove all around VA and North Carolina..me crying, and him just cowering...
I cried for weeks...I loved that dog more than I loved any person I know.

Kudos to you!!!

(146,317 posts)He's standing beside my desk chair as I type this. Kitties are shut into the rooms where they're sleeping. We had another close meeting with Dude and the old cat. No aggressive behavior or panic. They just looked at each other. Soon enough, Dude will be given the run of the house. A few more meetings and it should be OK. The young cat has hidden away, but I saw her on the basement stairs, looking at Dude in his wire kennel. That will take longer, but the cat can easily stay out of Dude's way until it's more used to him.
