The phenomenon known as Adele has been going on in the background of my life for what seems like well over a year. Two or three of the hugest hits from her latest album are always in some kind of rotation, pleasantly burbling at low volume over satellite radio or Pandora when I'm at work. I've heard these songs so often that I can recognize and hum the tunes even if I didn't know their names.
I took a little notice when I saw the latest James Bond movie, I've always been partial to the musical themes and songs, particularly the old Shirley Bassey stuff, and I thought the theme for "Skyfall" was particularly well done and in keeping with the classic Bond themes.
For whatever reason, last night, for the first time, I actually sat down and LISTENED to a number of her songs as Youtube videos, including the smash radio hits, and I was totally amazed at her voice and the quality of the songs. So I feel like a total dope!

(6,261 posts)We don't watch TV, but we do occasionally rent old TV series on DVD to see what the fuss was all about. Within the last year, we finished the x-files (including all spinoffs), Twin Peaks, and Nortern Exposure.
We may embark on Seinfeld or the Simpsons one of these days. As for music, we might give Men at Work a listen one of these days after hearing 'Land Down Under' the other day. I rather liked it. Needless to say we haven't listened to popular music since about 1978 or so.
When it comes to watercooler conversations we're a spent force, but at least we get to enjoy what's stood the test of time and we don't have to wait a week for the next episode!

(32,086 posts)"The Big Bang Theory" was on for two or three years before I discovered it. The same went for "Monk", "House", and several other shows that were very popular for a number of years before I ever caught on.
I have, more or less, been able to keep up with the pop music, because I take take exercise classes most days of the week. Much of what the instructors play tends to be current or recent pop songs. Needless to say, I'm really of sick of Adele's hit songs. And, Pink's, and Beyonce's, and Rihanna's, and Bruno Mars', and... If I hear that freakin' "Girl on Fire" song one more time, I think I might scream.

(61 posts)Not sure why except I don't watch too much TV or read magazines.
Pop culture seems to slip by me like a quiet stream in the forest.

What they are, I will never tell.

It is a cover of Adele's song Set Fire on the Rain. I like both version.

(47,558 posts)Back in October of 2011, I had a bunch of iTunes credit, a brand new iPhone, and time to kill on my hour-and-a-half commute home every day. Also, everybody else seemed to have good things to say about Dexter, so I gave it a shot. For the next few months I was all "How's Dex gonna get out of THIS one?"
Fun times.

I knew of Adele pretty soon, thanks to my kids. I think I noticed her because she sounds so real compared to the other pop singers on the radio today.
Some years ago, someone here had a YouTube link (to a song by the Band), I never knew the drummer sang so much.
Then I discovered what the whole YouTube thing was about. I eagerly told my kids about it. That was the day they realized their mother was basically a dinosaur.

I'm not very interested in pop culture.
