Through the 90's, I spent a lot of time on 3rd shift. On my off days, unable to sleep, Art Bell kept me glued to the radio. (Like Art, I hold a ham radio license and still listen to the archaic A.M. band.) I don't believe in UFOS, Sasquatch, or shadow people. However, some of the shows on military technology such as HAARP and formerly secret government spy programs, upon checking, turned out to have basis in fact.
The show kin of pointed you in the right direction for some fascinating and often hair raising research.
I felt the show lost a lot when Art Bell left, but one in a while I still tune in. Any other far out insomniacs out there?

(10,418 posts)I used to be a long haul trucker and I was listening in when his show rivaled Limbaugh's in popularity. I would schedule my driving time, if it permitted, just to be able to listen to that show as I barreled through the night in my 18 wheeler. I loved it when a trucker would call in and Art would have him or her honk the air horn on the air. Ah, those were the days.
It's just not the same. Tonight is an exception. I once worked part time in a truck stop c.b. shop in the 90's. I loved installing radio systems, and met drivers from all over the U.S., an Canada. Anyone who thinks truckers are dumb people are ssadly mistaken. 90% of the drivers I met were intelligent and very independent thinkers, with big hearts. Great to hear from you!

(10,418 posts)Truckers have a lot of time on their hands to think. It turns a lot of them into blue collar philosophers. If you work in a factory or an office or maybe in retail or food service, it seems to me that your mind would have to be too engaged in the work for it to go off pondering independent ideas. And being alone a lot will make your mind work, too.

(32,324 posts)Of Art Bell? The longer of the two was hilarious - even the fictional commercials were hilarious. It featured products like the "ass purse" and all the guests were military people with two first names as their names, like "Corporal Andrew Samuels" who of course, Bell would address as "Samuel Andrews"
There was also a shorter parody that had to do with the "Num Num Num's" who were I think, aliens attacking the radio station there in Parump.
I still have the shorter parody on my Hard Drive, but lost the longer parody, and it is no longer available anywhere that I can find.

I've been a night-owl since I was a small child and Coast-to-Coast
provided a LOT of entertainment and education (and sometimes just
diversion/background noise).
.
Art Bell was brilliant, interesting, cynical yet open-minded, and witty.
He was also a surly old curmudgeon who somehow avoided being
annoying and/or unendurable.
.
Compared to Art, his replacement George Noory seems phony and
in it for the gig rather than genuine curiosity and research. He's also
way further over to the right side of politics than Art was.
.
I stopped listening when Noory took over. The closest thing to
classic and brilliant Old Time Radio collapsed and died with the
departure of Art Bell.

One such flight, a C-5 Galaxy carrying over 100 children, most of them infants, was hit by ground firetaking off crashed and burned, all the kids died. This brought a pouring in of funds from around the world to help those kids. Art is a tough old bird, but his heart isin the right place.
I never got through to Art. I was on Georges show and got to talk to the original "Will and Penny" from "Lost in Spaace"... another great 60's show.
I collect antique radios. Iwas only able to keep one, due to economic reality. It is a 1929 Freshman table radio, a.m. - shortwave. Made during the depression, ironically, it still plays wonderfully. I used to liten to Art on a 1958 Hallicrafters general communications reciever. Along with the shortwave piraates.

Does anyone think our party will ever catch on that allowing corporate control of radio. Is a fatal mistake? Right wing hate radio is mind poison. And it has a monopoly on a.m.. How sad for a meium that once brought America FDR's "Fireside Chats".

I have an internet radio at home and the capability to put internet radio in vehicles is here or nearly here.

(3,574 posts)"Tuned In Radio" and a scanner via internet. But, there is still something magical about radio coming over the air without wires (although internet can be received via wireless!). Perhaps it is a leftover fascination of Nikola Teslas dream of sending electrical power without the need for wires... in any event, in the case of a catastrophe such as Katrina or 911, radio will still function when internet and cellphones are disabled. Hence radios enduring value.

1- Leave it on the all-talk/no-music so that I can drone myself to sleep after whatever number of latrine runs. Oh, it can be as few as one or none, but sometimes more.
2- Art was great. NOORY is a boring loser and a quasi-wingnut, frequently hosting the Swiftbot ghost writer whassisname, Jerome CORSI, but see #1.
3- When it's hair raising, I've had to click it off sometimes.
So that covers the contradiction: Always on but not a fan (anymore).

(3,574 posts)one Navy guy doesn't like another! Some of Georges guest hosts, such as rob simone last night, were really good. George is much less skeptical than Art, which makes it that much harder to suspend disbelief. BTW, in the 90's when i got my Ham license, HAARP was doing a publicity thing to dispel some of the dark rumors going around. It is an Air force/Navy facility. One night they had a dx contest, if you recieved their signal and qsl'ed, they sent you a postcard with a pic of their antenna array. I got one!!! (long since lost in all the moves after the crash )

(70,762 posts)so were the Swiftbots with KERRY. I broke off contact with a webring of my Vietnam shipmates in '04 because they were raging Wingnuts. It didn't hurt a bit. I'm a Dem through and through, but besides that, if a Dem turns out to be a crook like the JEFFERSON dude in Louisiana or a total jerk like John EDWARDS, they are over the side, starboard or port, whichever is closer, for me.
The same goes for any member of a Dem coalition sub-group: Hispanic, Black, Gay, Feminist, whatever. If they do bad things, the label doesn't save them.

However outlandish, hearing him led me to research MkUltra, and when I read what they REALLY were doing, it went FAR beyond any of his claims - they gave a guy LSD for a month without him knowing it. Fortunately Canadians realize the historic importance of this stuff and don't have their heads up the ass of the christian right like our own FCC. "My baby is the butcher man, he's got the finest meat in town"...then you realize the song is 80 odd years old! (5,062 posts)C2C is a right wing talk show nowadays. First hour, George Noory talks about the days events and he often trashes Obama and the Democrats while giving the Republicans a free pass. Jerome Corsi and a guy from Newsmax are his 'political advisors' on C2C. I heard one night when he had open lines. The callers who called in and trashed liberals, Obama, and praised the Republicans and Bush and so one were disgusting. I have also heard him cut off callers who have political views that differ from his. He engaged the birther topic for a while there. George is nuts. There is a guy who fills in for him who is actually more right wing and does not care how much his bias shows. Only one I like on C2C is George Knapp. He NEVER gets into politics and has cut callers off if he feels the conversation is going in that direction.Knapp also knows how to keep an interview exciting. He is a real journalist and a great host.
I had heard that Art Bell could not stand George Noory. Art was not the one who picked his replacement and I have heard that he did not want to have anything to do with C2C because of him. I guess he really has retired this time. Wish he would get his own show and come back.Say what you will about Art, but he put on a damn good show. (65,180 posts)George Knapp does not share his political views on the air. He has said this before. SOmething to the effect that this is not a show about politics but a show about the unknown and paranormal. You don't have to share politics to join in on the forum. I have always respected him for saying that.He has had guests on whom he has called friends who are very liberal and very right wing. For example, he often has T.Boone Pickens on but at the same time reminds us that Picken's wife,Madeleine, and him (Knapp) share a common interest. They both are charitable with a horse sanctuary in Nevada.Knapp has also applauded the Occupy Wall Street movement and seems to be concerned with climate change,so who knows exactly where he stands.
Maybe this is why I like him. He reminds me more of Art Bell. I've heard him be very cynical with guests and really give them a hard time if he has trouble believing their story or if they have credibility. However, George is a full time anchor for a TV station in Nevada so I doubt he would have the time to do a night time show as well.
