A favorite Christmas memory from childhood.

Mine was going with my Grandfather to cut down the cedar tree for the Chrismas tree.

My Grandfather only allowed a few to grow and kept the branches trimmed.

That night would set it up in the fancy living room, used only for company and special days.

The door was kept shut most of the time, I quess to keep it clean.

The room would be cold, and the smell of the tree was really strong.

We would decorate the tree a week before Christmas, and the door would be kept open for that.

Also the smell of apples, my Grandfather would buy a big box of apples.

That is my Christmas memory.

Were you the only one accompanying your grandfather?

One my favorite Christmas memories was walking in the snow at night with my family on a road that went up a hill through pine woods. The neighbors who lived on the hill and nearby gathered at the turnaround at the top where a bonfire had been started in the middle. The adults drank mulled wine, and the kids mulled cider, to help keep us warm. Everyone sang Christmas carols and the kids ran around and climbed on the snowbanks.

When I was little, we always had a fake tree. Sometime around 14/15, I decided we should have a real tree. At that time, our property was next to an enormous vacant parcel owned by the Achdiocese of Detroit, and it was starting to grow up with young trees, including many Eastern Red Cedar aka Virginia Juniper, Juniperus virginiana. Very dense, prickly, and if in a good site very symmetrical. I had hundreds to choose from, so found the "perfect" one about 7 feet tall.

It was so prickly it was painful to decorate, but looked and smelled great.

I cut a tree back there quite a few years, probably 8-10, until it was sold for development and almost the entire parcel clear cut, bulldozed, which was sad.
