Nothing wrong with them but damn not what I wanted.
The doll died a horrible death, a victim of bb guns and fire crackers.
I still remember that Christmas, what a sad Christmas morning.

(961 posts)I think it was in the Sears catalog. The barn was made of painted tin, the animals were all so cool looking. I was 6 or 7 that year. Well Christmas morning comes and I get a farm alright.... A Fischer Price Farm! For babies! My mother understood how I felt but my father was so pissed at me for not liking it. He thought it was the most reasonable gift as it would be good for my younger siblings, too.
That was also the year I realized for my birthday, my younger sibs received gifts (So they wouldn't feel left out), yet I never received one when we celebrated my 4 older sibs' birthdays. That was the year I put two and two together and learned that if I wanted something for myself I was selfish.
But! I am NOT bitter!

(18,705 posts)A neighbor kid had one and I wanted one to.
I think fort was plastic, heavy duty.
I just knew I would get it.
I was so sad looking at the doll and tea set.
I didn't even touch the new toys, except for the doll much later.
I never did get the fort.

(961 posts)those childhood disappointments can be the harshest!
The whole 'gender appropriate gifts' attitude sucked. I wanted dolls...er action figures...but would get toy guns. Johny and Jane West with horses... Big Jim and Big Jake! I did get those at one point. I had the only interracial gay couple in the neighborhood. But they were closeted...just good friends that had to share a sleeping bag on cold nights.
Have a picture from my 8th birthday when my mother gave me Johny West. I'm trying to hide a huge grin and my father is sitting there scowling. One of my favorites!

(18,705 posts)I was not happy.
It showed.
I had hundreds of little toy soldiers, cowboys, indians, tanks, jeeps, and horses.
I never understood why the doll and tea set.
I am glad you had your action figures.
You MoM was smart.

(5,662 posts)getting a toy rolling vacuum cleaner from an aunt who lived on the other side of the country and didn't visit much. A few minutes later, there's footage of me smashing it on the concrete outside.
I watch it now and think "You go girl!"

(18,705 posts)There wasn't much we didn't do to that poor doll.
It was a tough doll, but at last it was time to bury it.
We give it full military honors, it earned it.

(31 posts)Got an Atari 7800 when all the other neighborhood kids had Nintendo. But my dad more than made up for it a couple years later when I got a massive boom box that I blasted for about 12 years.
