Well, the weirdest thing happened tonight at about 7:40. I was in the kitchen making chocolate chip cookies to give as gifts, and the doorbell rang. I had dough all over my hands, so I didn't answer it as Dan was in the living room and closer to the door. Of course, Dan doesn't answer doors. There were some loud knocks at the door so I rinsed my hands, and opened the door. There were two little girls running away, saying Merry Christmas. Their mom was waiting for them out in the car. I looked down, and there was this decorated cardboard tube, like a bottle of wine comes in, there was also a card. The tube is very heavy. It's 3/4 of the way full of change.
The card is not signed, and there is a letter inside the card. It explains that this is an anonymous gift and it's an idea from a book called Christmas Jars by Jason F. Wright. It is about thinking and praying and putting your change in a jar, then giving it away to a random person who is in need. The motto is "One Jar, One Birth, One Saviour." Oh My. We cannot keep this generous gift in good conscience, as we're both atheists....and there are people and animals waaaay worse off than we are.
So, we will be donating the money to the local no kill shelter in the name of my very much missed friend, Susan Stursberg. Merry Christmas.

(31,525 posts)I had stopped at the grocery store after work. After I had paid for my things, I decided to call a cab rather than tote my purchases the 3 blocks from the bus stop to the house. While I was waiting, a young woman came up and thrust $10 into my hand saying God had told her to do so. I tried to give it back, explained that I didn't need the money, etc., but she insisted that she couldn't take it back because God wanted me to have it. I finally told her "Fine, but I'm not keeping it", went home and made a nice donation to our local food bank.
Being a nonbeliever, it really made me feel kind of strange.

(1,353 posts)It was a very generous thought, and a great thing to do, but it just felt weird. That's why I'm not keeping the money, even though I could use it, as I'm unemployed. I feel that as long as it goes to a good cause, I'm keeping the intentions of the givers intact.
