The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsWell...the flu has a mighty strong grip on me now
Been puking my guts up
coughing up blood, and all kinds of science experiments..
my body feels like it got hit by a Mac truck
My lungs feel like they are on fire...
and my Boss doesn't believe that I am sick...he allowed several people time off for the Xmas break, and now he has zero coverage at the office...I braved the cold on Christmas Eve, and went in, which is why I am so bad now...

(2,584 posts)My sister called me to tell me that she woke up early this morning with the flu. She said she wound up puking every hour for several hours. She was checking to see if I was o.k. (we spent the last 2 days together for Christmas).
I told her I woke up with a headache this morning, and felt kind of crummy, so I slept in. I took my ward off sickness tonics after I got up. I used St. John's Wort tincture, Mushroom Defense tincture, mixed in to some grapefruit juice, with a packet of EmergenC added, and topped up with sparkling water. It seemed to help ward off the virus.
After I talked to my sister, I took more of the above, with Boneset tincture added (boneset is an herb that is specific for the flu), and also took some Elderberry Syrup. Elderberry helps reduce the severity of the flu symptoms, and shortens the duration of the flu.
And poo on your boss Why do they think we make this kind of stuff up?

The good news is: you don't seem to catch the same flu twice.

(6,011 posts)several years ago, working at an elementary school as health aide (cheap version of school nurse), I got the worse flu I've ever experienced. Its severity may have been due to the infrequency I have had the flu, and now that I'm older it may have hit harder.
I hope you will be feeling better today! Taking a shower and breathing the steam, then getting back in bed and sleeping a lot seems to help.

(1,136 posts)at my house as well. 104 temperature for about 3 days, and just general ickiness on top of the throwing up. I wish I could tell you something that worked to make us feel better, but it just seemed that time was the only thing. That and hot peppermint tea with honey to warm you up and help the queasiness a bit.
To add insult to injury, I woke on Christmas Eve with strep. No christmas for me as I didn't want to spread the love to the family.
Wishing you a speedy recovery. Stay warm and keep hydrated. Sending healing thoughts your way.

(1,136 posts)Have you called a doctor? It worries me that you passed out!
And yes, tell your boss a thing or two. Or maybe 10. What a complete jerk.
Hang in there. Try to take care of yourself.

(2,584 posts)I purchased Boneset tincture from Mountain Rose Herbs. They have a web site: www.mountainroseherbs.com
I had to order it from them because none of our local natural food stores carries it. It is a specific herb for fighting the flu.
Mushroom Defense: I think I bought it from Whole Foods Market. Hmm...just checked the bottle. I guess I've had it for awhile. Apparently I bought it at Wild Oats Market, which was teh precursor to Whole Foods in this area. I am not sure if it is still available.
The ingredients are: Shitake Mushrooms, Reishi Mushrooms, Maitake Mushrooms, Astragalus Root, and Licorice Root.
The mushrooms would be to help boost the immune system; same function for the Astragalus Root; Licorice root would be to help harmonize the other plants to work together.
You can probably find the dried mushrooms at your local natural foods or health foods store. You can make tea out of them...instructions are on the package. Or you can simmer them in chicken broth, and drink the broth. This might stay down better than eating the 'shrooms.
Astragalus root tincture, and Licorice root tincture should be available from the same kind of natural foods/health foods outlets.
I checked the Mountain Rose web site: under single tinctures they have Astragalus, Maitake, and Reishi tinctures. Under the combo tinctures they have one for boosting immune function which contains, amongst other things, Astragalus Root and Reishi mushroom.
Good luck getting better! I have added taking echinacea tincture to the other stuff I have been doing. I will take it for 10 days, then taper off. Echinacea supposedly loses its effectiveness after 10 days.
I would kick your boss' hiney, if I could! Sounds like he is mean-spirited, a Grinch for sure.

(487 posts)zinc has anti-viral activity against several types of viruses that cause respiratory infections. He also states that based on clinical research, zinc supplement is more effective if is does not contain sorbitol, mannitol or citric acid.
If you can get the zinc throat lozenges, they are the best at coating the throat and being close presence to the lungs. Relief is almost immediate when used this way.

Echinacea is another good immune booster used exclusively in Europe all the time. Echinacea was the number one cold and flu remedy in the United States until it was displaced by sulfa antibiotics.
Get well!! We need tax payers!
