What a great play and even even better movie.
First time I saw it was when I was a kid and didn't get the full ghist of the play. We also read it in College.
I watched it again a few years ago and now I can see how great all the actors were.
I always thought that Kim Hunter wasn't really that great of an actress but watching that scene where she walks out of the apartment up stairs when Stanley is crying out in anguish and how she changes from frightened woman to sulty, primitive sexual being just by the way she changes her face...
Williams sure got right down to the raw base of humanity in this one.
Clash of class as the antebellum gave way to the rise and celeration of working men right after WWII.

(37,648 posts)I didn't get that from it at all. Was that one of thepoints? Who was a different class? They were all middle class/lower class, weren't they?
I thought it was about sensitive people & how they buckle under the weight of the cruelty that life can be (Blanche), and how cruel and selfish people can be (Stanley). I thought Blanche had delusions of grandeur because of her mental breakdown...her inability to cope with life. Stella copes....but she's a doormat. Stanley copes by trying to bend life and those around him to fit what he will accept.

Blanche shot and killed her gay husband and that is why she ended up as, well, the painted lady from Oriole.
In the play, Stanley rapes Blanche and Stella doesn't leave him like she does at the end of the movie.

(5,909 posts)Blanche, and Frances McDormand as Stella. It was great! I had never read the play nor seen the movie so I didn't know anything about it. It was a class trip with my high school English class.
One correction I believe--I think Blanche's husband committed, not her killing him.

(237 posts)but I read somebody saying that Kim Hunter deserved her Oscar just based on that scene alone. I concur.
