Okay so not as dramatic as the title might suggest but... My dream job just called and they want to interview me! And I have a good feeling about the whole thing...
The issue is I'd need to move across the country to San Francisco... Any DUers know where a 28 y/o single gay (but not a party boy) should look to live? Budget is under 1000 for 1 bedroom/studio... Ideas would be so helpful!

(29,047 posts)Sorry, don't know anything about SF, except they have, or at least used to have, a pretty sweet wax museum of medieval torture. I loved it when I was a teenager.

(24,305 posts)1K a month won't get you much. If you plan to live outside the city, ask the employer if parking is provided at the job. Parking in SF can cost as much as an apartment in some cities. If you do live in the city, public transportation is the best on the west coast. Again, if you look for apartments, see if a parking space is provided. They aren't always.
Fantastic city, though. Great night life, reataurants, lots of free stuff to do. And, the best baseball team and ballpark there is.

(10,337 posts)Negotiate your salery. I,m not sure you can even rent a room in S.F. For < 1,000. Spend some time on Zillow.

(28,749 posts)It is crazy expensive I have been looking, I imagine I'll be taking BART quite often and turning to vodka to deal with the commute!

(10,337 posts)Seriously though, my step daught who is living in My condo in San Jose is an executive seceratary. She makes over 90K a year. Make sure you know what occupations similar to yours get paid. I don't know what you do or where you live now or how much you make but the S.F. Bay area is one of the most expensive places to live in the country.
I was a union sheet metal worker. My total pay package was over $86.00 per hour and we struggled. We retired to Tucson. The place I live in now would be at least $1,500,000 in the Bay Area.
Go in with your eyes open.
My little 1100 sf condo in downtown San Jose (about 50 miles south of S.F.) is worth almost $400K and that's after the crash!
I'm not saying don't do it. S.F. Is amazing. I grew up there. I'm just saying, when you negotiate your salary, you need to factor housing in. Clothing, cars, most everything else costs about the same everywhere but housing is not cheap.

And when you're ready for a break from unpacking, be sure to hit the Buena Vista Cafe for Irish Coffee. It cures whatever ails ya.
This old, straight guy is excited for you. Wishing you the best of luck--and looking forward to seeing you at a CA meetup in the future...
