The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsI’m telling you this is one of the great songs ever.
Heard a small bit of it last night when the tribute to deceased aired.
Reminded me of how great and relevant this song is..

(46,436 posts)The warmup band was an unknown group called Led Zeppelin.
It was a kickass concert. Vanilla Fudge, also.

(8,515 posts)Warm up for Led Zepplin when I saw them in N.Y. Iron Butterfly
Lead Singer came on stage after Zepplin and said," thats an hard act to follow... The truth...

(46,436 posts)Led Zeppelin was scary good, especially awesome since we hadn't even heard of them yet. The first album was released a little after this.

(8,515 posts)Iron Butterfly and Zepplin came out first. Marshall amos piled 3 high and Page struck his first note and Plant sang is first note. We were high and just grabbed our heads as stoners do and acted like we were witnessing the second coming...... We all went home around 3:00 got up the next day and went to buy the album.
Saw them about 4 more times in City area.. Started out with Babe, Im gonna leave you..
Our other incredible encounter was with Jeff Beck. No picture on his first album, Truth....So we thought Rod Stewart was Beck. Rod was so cool back then, First time we ever saw that kind of Mod English Style with a white guy singing and dancing on stage with the style of a man who knew his blues and had an abundance of
sole.. We saw Rod with Jeff in N.Y. at least 6 times, He then went on to join Faces,.. What a trip!

(46,436 posts)I saw him in Phoenix in 2000. Amazing show. I loved that "truth" album.

(8,515 posts)Saw them in 68 on Long Island. We thought Rod Stewart was Jeff Beck, cause there were no pictures on the album. There was little talk of this music on a.m. radio. So every concert was a surprise.
We use to get so pissed at beck. Only played an hour set and came back for only one encore.Less is more, however..Couldnt get enough of that band. Stewart was so cool back then. His style was a brand new thing and we went nuts for it.
SawBeck back then about 5 times.

(21,925 posts)was a very fine guitarist. I believe it was in New York that he walked into a music store and saw the yet unknown Jimi Hendrix trying out an amp and he asked him if he could jam. He was only about 14. Jimi invited Randy to play with him in clubs in the village and when he was asked to come to England to be a star he asked Randy to come with him but his parents refused.

(21,925 posts)Jimi Hendrix. California was the composer of Nature's Way and his original name was Randy Craig Wolfe. Jimi Hendrix gave him his stage name Randy California because his band The Blue Flames (in which Randy started playing at the age of 14) had two guys named "Randy", one from Texas who became Randy Texas and the other from California who became Randy California.

(9,385 posts)the year I graduated from high school. You're right, it's one the greats. It's beautiful and energizing and sad and frightening, all at the same time.
They had a number of big hits, but many might not know of a more obscure song by Spirit called "Mechanical World" (it was too long to play on most radio stations, and made TPTB nervous anyway). My late husband, a Viet Nam combat vet, used to say that it captured exactly how he felt when he first came back.

I think that, and the Animals' "Sky Pilot" are the two most intense songs about the war, that are done from a vet's pov.
I too, saw Spirit perform -- at the Fillmore West. It was unique and unforgettable, as you might expect. Memories like that, of that era, are priceless. Thanks for posting this, busterbrown.
