(6,581 posts)Of course, only quasi-wonders, since it was hard to be bigger than DD in the 80s. Lot of hits, just under a different name with more band members.

(21,925 posts)"Talk Talk" got the radio play but I liked this kooky tune on the flip side.

My favorite song of his is "On the Border".

(29,414 posts)For me it was high school and everyone was into disco, which I hated (still do.) Thankfully, I did have a few sane friends that got me into Be Bop Deluxe

(45,558 posts)Cleveland had a pretty good FM station up until about 1980 and then they went commercial....

(29,414 posts)I gravitated toward a public station locally called KPFT, partly because a friend had said he heard them smoking pot on the air! Considering they were (and are still) a Pacifica station, I don't doubt that kind of thing happened
However, even public stations aren't immune from drastic (and unwanted) programming changes. The University of Houston had an award-winning jazz format for their station. However, when the city's only classical station turned into an alt-rock format, UH decided to dump the jazz in favor of taking over the classical format for the city. They gave their jazz library to another university, who then mixed it all together with their soul/r&b format. That didn't work for me as far as listening to jazz went, and I wasn't the only one that reacted that way.

(21,925 posts)I'm an avid fan of both.

(29,414 posts)I like both, and enjoyed the commercial classical station when they were on the air. They would even play PDQ Bach. When I called the public one to suggest that, I was told that their listeners wouldn't appreciate the humor!
That dj probably didn't know what he was talking about, or had management that didn't because when Schickele came to town, Jones Hall was packed with classical music fans
One show I missed the most from the old jazz station was on "Acid Jazz". Plenty of experimental and edgy jazz there.

(21,925 posts)I also play a little classical violin but no jazz on it (I wish I could). This guy, Roland Dyens is one of the foremost classical guitarists in Europe but he also plays a lot of jazz as well. Gene Bertoncini is an American guitarist with a foot in both worlds of classical and jazz. Another amazing player equally great in jazz and classical is Sir Andre Previn (former conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, L.A. Philharmonic, and several others, along with 4 Academy awards for film scoring). Previn has mastered both classical and jazz.

(6,057 posts)But I still like Daltrey's cover version better.
Well, maybe NOT after I heard the entire Pratt version.
But here's the Daltrey cover for what it's worth.
