The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsIs there any good new music out? I need some new tunes.
I check iTunes and it seems the newest albums out are either the neo indie hispter crap that's calling itself "rock music" or it's Christian pop music. Anyone have any good suggestions?
Some albums I've got recently are Nick Cave's new album and Tomahawk's new album "Odd fellows".

I suppose you're familiar with Camel and They Might Be Giants then.

(14,400 posts)I love this album, it's kind of a epic rock opera by a "hardcore punk" band. I'm not a huge hardcore fan but this album really got to me.

(7,875 posts)But there are zillions of old albums I have yet to hear.
I recently started listening to Bob Dylan and John Lennon's solo stuff.
I see you don't have Hawkwind listed- They have approximately one zillion albums out. As long as you stay away from their really old stuff- which often sounds like it was recorded on someone's Panasonic cassette recorder- you should do OK, but I particularly recommend The Xenon Codex, Space Bandits, Palace Springs, and Take Me To Your Leader.
Geezer (Geezer Butler's solo project- also recorded under the name GzR) is also awesome:
Also if you're a Black Sabbath fan, there's this little-known Canadian band called sHEAVY:
Also check out:
Earth (Not to be confused with Black Sabbath playing under their original name)
Afro-Celt Sound System
MC900ft Jesus

(41,990 posts)The really heavy stuff wears me out. I'm more of a blues/rock/jazz/indie girl, but I like the more outré stuff in ethnic, bounce, rap and Swamp Pop. And a bunch of other stuff too. Cajun. Zydeco. Gin Wigmore!!

(716 posts)"Amarillis" is one of their originals...
They've got a lot of music out there, but another clip you might like is a cover of "Simple Man"...
Then there's Sherri Mullen. Her son, Shane, joined her on stage a couple of years ago and they renamed the act "SM2" (Sherri Mullen, Shane Mullen, hence SM Squared). I've been to far too many of her performances to count. She's local and a good friend. I've even sung harmony and backup vocals on stage with her! She's performed with a lot of musicians from the area but Shane really added a fresh feel to the music, a touch of grunge if you will.
A lot of the video clips she posted have pretty bad sound because they're from live performances. The studio work on her four albums is awesome. Curiously, this song was just on shuffle in the CD magazine this morning...
"Life Is A Trip"...
Also check out "Love You Til The Sunrise"... and "No Rain, No Rainbow"... (the reference to "Dave Kelly" is for someone she used to perform with, and still does sometimes, who was also her guitar teacher). "No Apology" is another good one...
Her main home page is here... http://www.sherrimullen.com and at the bottom of the page is a picture of her in a white tank top - Dave Kelly is the one on the right. It leads to one of my favorite songs in music video format... http://www.sherrimullen.com/video.html - and I've held the black guitar in the music video!!!

(54,428 posts)There's a bunch of new indies that post their stuff on there. You can go to a channel that plays stuff by a known band you like, and then it also plays stuff posted by singers or bands that feel they would appeal to fans of the established sound.
Check out: The Freedom Toast, and look for their instrumental piece "Canyonlands" for example

(2,068 posts)I check there each week at new release Tuesday. Browse each new release album under Alternative and take a quick listen to the highest rated song. If good, go deeper and also look at "what others have bought" can lead you to some gems once in a while. There is good new music out there, but you got to look harder and it is not in the Pop or rap section.
Some recent finds:
Real Estate
Two Door Cinema Club
Bear in Heaven
Wild Nothing
Toro y Moi

(4,522 posts)Awesome fun and cool band from LA: Hes My Brother, Shes My Sister (yeah, weird name - but cool)
Hes My Brother Shes My Sister is like a time warp to the golden present, wrapping nostalgia around the here and now with throwback flair and good taste. They make debauchery and estrangement so glamorous. The songs are as catchy as a radio pop jam, but throw off the trappings of plastic pop and wrap you in fur, folk, and the last drops of moonlight. (118,749 posts)a critically praised albums in the early 1970s and it didn't catch on...... except in South Africa where those songs became the anthems of the liberal anti-apartheid whites. His name is Rodriguez. He's from Detroit. He only found out his bootleg music was so popular in SA in 1998. Very humble poet type guy. Reminds me of Bob Dylan. I just bought the soundtrack at the CD store. Great find.
