(4,056 posts)It's been on (in its current incarnation) for 30 years now, and back in those days I was quick and knew almost the whole board. Now in my dotage it's totally hit or miss.

(72,300 posts)I don't know what there is about Jeopardy thesedays.
There is a theme which runs through each show.
Sometimes I feel totally clueless. I doubt it's my age. I'm only 64.

(35,392 posts)just not as informed on things as you wish you could be.
You could say that "Rain Man" was brilliant ... if your IQ test was about baseball stats. The price of a candy bar? Not so much. Math? AMAZING. But it wouldn't be terribly applicable.
Now, admitting that you don't know or understand something is a HUGE indication of intelligence if you are willing to find out the answer.
Ignorance is curable, stupidity is fatal. Stupid is choosing to remain ignorant.
I guess some can remember better than others

(10,039 posts)There are different types of intelligences. Everyone you know is good at one thing and horrible at the other. The differences in jeopardy nerds and you, is that these people probably reads encyclopedias and are possibly professional college students.
You can be very intelligent in math and suck at art, or you could suck at math and be very intelligent at art. It just goes that way in life.

(12,723 posts)Quite often the "questions" have huge clues in the phrasing of the words.
I was blown away that only one person got "ask not" yesterday. That one seemed very obvious to me.

Point 1. None of them knew all the answers.
Point 2. Sheldon didn't know the answer to last question. And he is suppose to be real smart.
Point 3. Penny quizzes them about Pop Culture. She knows the answers but they don't.

(16,986 posts)1. Most intellectually curious types (and I would assume you are one) have an area of expertise or three.
2. The questions on Jeopardy! are often phrased so that they contain a broad hint. Many of the right answers are simply skillful guesses.
3. It's important to respond to the actual question (not always clear to the average contestant/viewer) and not fixate on a detail.
4. Like crossword puzzles or other games, Jeopardy! is a good opportunity to give the little grey cells a workout. That beats a lot of what qualifies as TV programming these days...

(4,033 posts)we call it our bonding time.
Too often, as I answer one of the clues, mom looks over at me and asks "how did you know that?"
Sometimes at Final Jeopardy, I will answer before the clue is revealed. The first time I did this the category was "1950's Poetry" I answered the "The Howl". Mom never heard of it. I quoted the part of the poem, I paraprase now,"I saw the best minds of my generation go mad". Mom just stared at me. The clue was revealed and the contestants answered, and Alex quoted the same part of the poem I had just quote to mom. Mom threw a pillow at me and called me a smart ass.
And no, it was not a repeat.

(1,999 posts)My youngest son correctly answers many questions the contestants miss, too. I would be a total failure on the show, though, because I don't know anything that I should have learned in school, like history or geography.
For instance, everything I know about the history of England I learned from reading Phillippa Carr (Victoria Holt) novels.

Last night was a good one for me - I would have been near the top ... Other nights? it's like I'm a babe in the woods, without a clue ...
What's worse? ... as I age, I forget facts I've carried around for decades, knowing the answer but unable to recall it in time ...
