Harry Potter: Did Orlando mayor give away opening date?

Although Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer mentioned Universal Orlando’s Wizarding World of Harry Potter expansion and “next year” in the same breath during his State of the City speech Wednesday, a Universal spokesman said Dyer’s words could be misinterpreted.

“This summer, they will open the new Transformers 3D ride, followed by the opening next year of a new resort hotel and the expansion of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter,” Dyer said during a portion of the speech about Universal’s economic contributions to the city.

“I’m not reading the mayor’s words the same as you,” Universal spokesman Tom Schroder said Wednesday. ”All we have announced is that there will be a significant expansion of the Wizarding World of Harry Potter. Anything else is your speculation.”

Universal announced the expansion in December 2011, but the company has not released further details about the project, including the exact location on the property or opening date.
