Actually, a couple of stray cat problems.
A year or two ago I began to feed one, ONE, neighborhood cat, who had been left by people living next to me who moved. I haven't seen that cat in some time, but before he left he evidently pointed me out to some of his friends. Long story short, I cannot pull into my driveway without six or more cats running from all directions into my yard, meowing and wild decibels, rubbing all over everything, a couple on me, as I try to just get into my house.
Stop feeding them. Yes, I know. But.
There is an older cat who has completely left his former residence at the house across the street and now is around my house 27/7. I can't even leave my house without encountering this one. At this moment he is scratching at the back door, and I just fed him.
It gets a little sad.
This guy has had a rough life, I was told by a neighbor that some evil kids down the road put out one of his eyes for fun years ago, and he seems to have some problems and I have a hard time not feeding him. He's learned to come to the back of the house for food. Of course, all the others have too.
Here's the thing - I need to have these cats gone from greeting me every time I leave or return home, but at the same time help this older cat who seems to be starving all the time. He looks skinny too. He's lost hair. He smells terrible. I believe he has bowel issues. I think he's sick. I'm barely holding on financially at the moment, but I'm thinking about taking him to the vet.
At any rate, like I said, I got a stray cat problem.
I need the other ones to run to a different house every night, although I'm probably just a stop in their nightly carnivorous rampage. And I need to be able to feed the older one because, I'm not sure anyone else does and he doesn't look like he could get his own food.
So what do I do?

(68,644 posts)If not, talk to all the vets and animal hospitals about what to do.
Many of these will take in animals or see them at no charge.
If these things don't work, I don't know what to tell you.

I would start by calling a couple of local vets and seeing if they would know where to start.
Then I'd call the humane shelters.
After that - set up a paypal and see if DUers can pull through for you to get that old guy checked out?
You are an angel for trying to help...

I think most of us would try to help an animal in need.

(694 posts)Lots of cats are allergic to flea bites and will gnaw the hell out of themselves. That's probably the cause of at least the hair loss.
