My guess is that actual Amish have no idea about it because they can't watch tv... no?

(41,960 posts)I fell into it for some odd reason. What the Amish actually do and don't do is quite interesting. Of course who the heck knows what reality TV distorts, but these guys are the princes of twisted logic and manipulations. At the end of the season they have an episode where they all complain bitterly about how they were misportrayed, but I think they're coming back for more.
I trust I will be smarter. It's not even a guilty pleasure, it's just a guilty.

... a joke or a parody. There was a "Pimp my Buggy" competition once that
was just so far over the top that I can no longer believe that it's anything
even remotely depicting reality.
.
I lived near Lancaster and knew some Amish and had friends who worked
with them in the construction field and I knew some of their customs like
allowing their young to have some time to run wild and partake in the
outside world to make sure that they would truly be happy in the Amish
lifestyle, but this involved kinda cute things -- you'd see young Amish
yout's in their black pants and white dress shirts holding their 7-and-7's
in the bar and looking wide-eyed at everything and everyone around them.
Several of them would also pool their money and buy a used car, black and
remove all the chrome and hide it in the woods somewhere so their parents
wouldn't know.

This show is depicting them as exhibiting urban thug behavior and desires
and personalities.

(12,008 posts)From the little I know, all of the restrictive things we associate with their culture only apply once someone is an adult and has joined the church. The kids aren't so much forbidden these things as not given easy access to them as a matter of practical experience. They also manufacture and consume shit-loads of meth.
