Yesterday was fucked.

Last edited Mon Mar 4, 2013, 04:08 AM - Edit history (4)

My good friend of 35 years had to put his old cat down yesterday afternoon-

Vaska was a rescue - saved from the gas chamber multiple times because the staff at the pound just loved him. Mickey got him a little over a year and a half ago. The vet said he was old but really couldn't say how old.

We had taken care of Vaska for days at a time when Mickey was out of town. He'd come and chill with our two cats, ever the elderly statesman, not falling for Chester's antics....

We loved him, too.

SO THEN:

Last NIGHT my beautiful Savannah and I went to the 50th birthday party of one of her best friends here in town and when we get there, the place is stunning - her husband had the place TOTALLY covered in outrageous food and libation. It looked like a scene from a King Arthur movie - not in terms of costume but the amazing spread.

We're there about 15 minutes and we hear the 16 year old daughter scream from the basement like she is literally on fire. I thought someone had fallen on their little dog - until I heard someone holler "Dial 911"

I charged into the basement and saw the husband face down on the floor - in a pool of blood - he'd broken his nose in a fall.

I knelt beside him and could not hear any breath so two of the other guys and I turned him over - they began chest compressions and I gave the mouth to mouth.

Savannah had dialed 911 and we kept at him for the 15 minutes it took the paramedics arrived.

They took over and I left the basement. As I started up the stairs, out of breath, one of the guests touched my arm and whispered "You need to wash the blood off your face...."

So I went up to the kitchen and washed up...Had a big drink of vodka and when they wheeled him out of the house towards the ER I got some bleach and went down to clean the blood off the floor.

He didn't make it. He was dead right after he hit the floor, according to the ER doctors. Heart attack.

We were told that there was no saving him.

It's not the first time I've had another man's blood in my mouth during CPR and not the first time I've had to use Purex and a scrub brush to remove blood from a concrete floor -

I got a little of the ptsd from the old days and my previous experience in this.

I believe it's with me tonight. Hold your loved ones close. Hold fast.

Thanks for letting me share this with you all.

During emergencies like this I am completely focused and extremely calm. Been that way forever.

Living the day to day stuff has driven me completely insane, but if you've been hurt or are being threatened, I'm your guy.

I was fine until a couple hours after we got home when the shock or whatever it is wore off and then I got the shakes and started crying.

I am grateful for one thing:

That he was surrounded by his and her families and, so, surrounded by love.

And no one can ask for more than that.

I'll definitely hold my loved ones closer tonight than I usually do. I am sorry you had to suffer through that - as a fellow PTSD sufferer, I know how painful and scary it can be when we face potential triggers and very high stress situations. I hope you're alright. I wish I had some profound words of wisdom that might help make it better... some times though, all you can really do is keep on keeping on. Be safe - and know that your efforts are admired and respected. I can't do what you do, I haven't either the stomach or the courage for it. Bless you for trying to help, a great many people would not have had that courage.

I'd advise you to take care of yourself, but I think you've gotten to be very good at that through all the ups and downs and you already know what to do. When you go through the triggers and the struggles you learn some management skills to survive.

That really sucks, though, for you, his family, and for all involved. I feel for you and the hurt you're going through now. You're not alone, brother. Hang in there...

She was choking on a piece of bread and I did the Heimlich maneuver. The first words out of her mouth once she could breath again were to thank me.

Funny thing is I had only seen how to do it with posters in the restaurant kitchen. I was a waitress.
