For what it's worth . . . I do care about you.
I know that you don't remember me from the Boston meet-up. There were so many DUers there.
If I didn't have two tees with signatures I wouldn't remember some of 'em either.

imo: yes. It will be worth every dollar you can afford to spend.

As a visitor, you can bring certain goods into Canada for your own use as “personal baggage”. Personal baggage includes clothing, camping and sports equipment, cameras and personal computers. This also includes your mode of transportation, including vehicles, private boats and aircraft.

No problem with laptops.

But word of warning: If the U.S Customs guy ever asks you: "Do you have any firearms?", do NOT answer with: "What do you need?"

None of the times did I get hassled over anything and I traveled with all sorts of electronic devices. The only time I thought it was a sucky experience was when I took a ferry from Victoria back to Wash state. While still in Victoria, US customs made us wait inside our cars for 3 hours while they asked everyone the standard questions and we couldn't even walk across the street for a cup of coffee. After we got off the ferry it was more line waiting and question asking. It turned a 3 hour ferry ride into an all day experience. The best experience I had was flying my plane across. Just a few minutes after landing the customs guy collected my paperwork and we were on our way. I've never been searched.

They made us show up something like 3 hours before the ferry was scheduled to depart and once that deadline passed they wouldn't let anyone else in. So if you showed up even an hour before the ferry was scheduled to leave you were still too late. I saw a couple that was highly pissed because they got locked out for being a few minutes past the deadline and had to stay another night in Canada.

Trains.

Trains not only will eat your brains, they'll splatter the rest of you against the walls.

But otherwise, it's a dawdle!

Seriously, I had a convo once with a Canadian who told me he walked through one of the tunnels at night to get into the US! Said it scared him shitless! He made it safely, though. It's all in the timing.

I lived in Detroit all through the 90's and went to Windsor probably once a month on average and went to Toronto and Vancouver each once a year for the Indy Car races.

Granted, this was LOOONG before 9/11, but the biggest of your worries?

Is not getting into Canada.

It's getting back into the States.

I understand you need your passport these days, which you NEVER needed back then. If it was me, I would contact the US Customs/Border Patrol AT THE CROSSING you plan on going over (Detroit/Windsor, Niagara, etc) and ask them what you need to do beforehand.

When I was driving a tractor trailer to the Toronto Indy Car race for instance, I had to go to the US Customs office BEFORE I crossed and register my load. This is not easy as border traffic is NOT directed that way when you head out of the country. When I crossed at Detroit, I had to take surface streets to get to the Customs building because if I took the approach to the Ambassador bridge, there was no way to get to that office - it just fed you over the bridge.

When crossing to Vancouver, I had to pull over and park on the side of the road before I actually crossed the border and walk across the street to get to the US Customs building.

Best advice? Call and ask, but call the office at the place you plan on crossing.

must have passport (or card if driving, not good for air travel) although I have to wonder how the hell they could actually keep a US citizen out, or for how long.

when the rules were just being implemented for this requirement to return to the land of the free, I took the husband to lunch across the (US/Mexican) border and when they demanded the passport I told them I had called first and the person said a birth cert was good. but that was a few years ago.

don't know if they xray vehicles up that way but you can ask when you go through, don't know if that matters for a computer, probably not

back up data before you go (and maybe back up to a thumb drive anything you do there, just in case)

There's all kind of paperwork involved if you are on business, so even if you are on business you have to say it's a pleasure trip. I read your earlier threads so I know why you are going. Just say you're a tourist and you shouldn't have any problem. And don't admit to buying anything on your way back in. That's just more trouble waiting to happen.

no problem on any trip going either way. I've never been asked to open it, actually I don't think they've ever even seen it.

Going up they'll likely ask you where you're going, are you bringing any tobacco, alcohol or gifts then off you go.

On the way back they'll ask you where you're going, are you bringing anything back that you bought in Canada, tobacco or alcohol.

I've had them open the back of the SUV to take a quick look once or twice but they've never gone any further.
