People who talk with their hands drive me nuts when they're sitting close by me.

This doesn't happen to me by CHOICE; I'm talking about when I'm sitting in a group, the chairs are close together,
and somebody right next to me is flapping their hands all over the place, invading my personal space.

When necessary, I have put up my hand to defend my personal space.

Recently, I backed my chair up. She didn't even notice. Clueless!

Your suggestions?

Probably learned it from my parents who were teachers. They often use gestures.

I'm usually pretty good about keeping it restrained but...I recently drew the attention of a server in a restaurant because I was "talking with my hands"! She wanted to know what I needed. It took me a couple seconds to realize what I had done.

Some people really are clueless until you tell them with words.

A study was done a few years back (sorry, no link) where sighted children and children blind since birth were engaged in conversation. The blind children made virtually the same hand gestures when talking as the sighted children.

An adult should know better though, I suggest snapping loudly at the offending digits with your teeth. That should get her attention.

I've found myself talking crazy with my hands when I'm nervous, e.g., I'm training someone at work and I don't see the faintest glimmer of understanding. I think it's the adrenalin rush as my brain tries to regroup and give them the same information some way that will make sense.
