DU Album of the Day: "Talking Book" Stevie Wonder
In 1976, when Album of the Year Grammy winner Paul Simon gave his acceptance speech for "Still Crazy After All These Years," he thanked Stevie Wonder for not coming out with an album that year. Wonder had won Album of the Year in 1974 and 1975 and would again win in 1977. But before that unprecedented run (and this was when the Grammies were still a major award), Wonder came out with "Talking Book" in 1972, marking an expansion of his previous pop sound work that startled listeners.
In addition to the sweet "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," the album also features funk ("Superstition" and social commentary ("big Brother" that put out a marker to the public that Little Stevie Wonder, child prodigy, was growing up, and he had something to say.
