P.S.- That is indeed a cute dog.

(1,999 posts)Your dog looks like my big dog Trixie. She was a lot of awesome wrapped up in dog fur.
Biased? No. Your judgment is sound.

(17,087 posts)Catahoulas are a popular breed but you don't see them at dog shows much due to their wide variety of appearance, I guess. They are classed in the herding group, but are also commonly used for hunting/tracking.
"The Louisiana Catahoula Leopard Dog or Catahoula Cur is an American dog breed, named after Catahoula Parish, in the state of Louisiana, in the United States. The Catahoula is believed to be the first dog breed developed in North America. The breed is sometimes referred to as the "Catahoula Hound" or "Catahoula Leopard Hound", although it is not a true hound, but a cur. It is also called the "Catahoula Hog Dog", reflecting its traditional use in hunting wild boar."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Catahoula_Cur (The "type" dog pictured here looks a lot like my Cleo. )
Don Abney is considered the most knowledgable breeder. Nice little video here. http://www.donabney.com/information.php

(1,999 posts)I remember reading the word "cur" in Old Yeller and inferring that it was a bad thing, so not only did I learn about catahoulas, that misconception was cleared up.
Pretty and multi-talented.
We call our Daizie hog dog and/or pig bull, and it has nothing to do with hunting wild boar! Squirrels and crows are the biggest game she goes after, and she purposely stops short of catching the squirrel. It's all about the chase for her.

(17,087 posts)This photo shows the slight brownish tint in her legs and her blue/brown cracked eyes which are both common Catahoula traits.

she stole my heart, then stole my pillow
[IMG][/IMG]
this was last year, getting the all clear from the vet with no heart worms.
I won the dog lottery when I rescued her, since I literally scooped her off the street and saved her.
Had no idea what her personality would be like. She's sweet as pie.
Deadly tail, though... and strong as an ox for her 48lb body.

(1,999 posts)Daizie has a bald spot on her tail from whapping objects with it--usually my knees.
This is my Trixie and my Daizie -- and that is me waaaay over hovering on the edge of the bed.

You can't tell in this picture, but she has the same white marking on the chest. Is that boxer in yours?

(11,797 posts)and he boxes his little brother (who is a Shiba Inu mixed with something or other). But he's Vizsla too, hence the rust color and liver colored nose. He has gold eyes...and nothing but tumbleweeds between the ears
It's a good think he's handsome, because he's kinda dumb.

(11,797 posts)He got the Vizsla looks and the Boxer brains. My husband jokes that if you put an ear up to Draper's ear, you can hear the ocean.
He's a very efficient guard dog. He wouldn't hurt anyone- he loves people- but he sounds like he'd rip off your face. If I'm laying down, and he's in another room, he'll bark like crazy if people walk by our house. But if I'm awake and alert, he just lets out a low huffing and goes about his business.

He is not like a Chihuahua at all. He's relaxed, laid back and affectionate - and rarely if ever barks. Best dog I've had.
