Quiz starts off real easy..but don't be fooled, it gets tuffer.
Hint: Process of elimination is helpful as you go on.
I got 95%, screwed up the very last question.....sheesh.

My favorite one, you just type all of the names of the countries of the world
OFF THE TOP OF YOUR HEAD as fast as you can.
On Edit: Conquer the Continents at the Nussbaum link is a great classroom tool.
I started the students out on the easiest one, South America, which gave them
some confidence, then they worked their way through the others. Had contests
to see who could do it the fastest after some practice. I use it myself just for
a refresher every few months or so.

(18,101 posts)I got Finland and Norway confused and I had no idea on the flag.
DebJ
(7,699 posts)If you go left to right, the three countries are NSF, like a bounced check: Norway, Sweden, Finland.
pintobean
(18,101 posts)I thought I did pretty well, since it's been over 35 years since I've studied any of this in school. A few things have changed since then.

(27,677 posts)so I know where that is. And Finland fought the Soviets twice (and the Germans once) in WWII so hard to screw that one up. You know what they say: War is how Americans learn geography.

(7,699 posts)My husband is a military history fanatic and he has told me the story of how
the Union Jack is comprised of a combination of the nation's flags many times.
Also the Flag of Switzerland is the Red Cross, and he goes into his nutsy
conspiracy theories about Templars, etc.
I am a US history fan myself. But because I lived with my husband
and his better-than-Google memory, and our constant conversations
about nothing BUT social studies/politics/geography/history of all sorts,
when I took the Praxis in 2008 I was in the top scorers of all times.
I got the credit, but HE taught me; we just live this stuff.
BUT I only was able to do the last few questions correctly because of the process
of elimination. Off to Mr. Nussbaum with me because I don't like multiple choice!

(5,170 posts)the Union Jack being the combination of several flags, I did one of those "I could'a had a V-8" slaps. I knew that too, and it's obvious once you think about it.
But during the quiz, I was thinking the flag just doesn't look very Scottish. Blue? It wasn't an obvious choice. I guess I was looking for plaid. LOL.
Sekhmets Daughter
(7,515 posts)Estonia was a lucky guess and the flag was a process of elimination! Actually, several were a process of elimination! Thanks for the fun
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)They could've made it harder by e.g. having their possible answers be adjacent Baltic or former Soviet states.
Remember, the UK flag is a composite of the St. George, St. Patrick and St. Andrew's cross (the last question).
I used to be amazed at the state of Americans knowledge of the European map. I remember watching a quiz show when a highlighted country in a European map was shown with the hint "It's next to Holland". "Uhm... Egypt?", The contestant ventured. I hooted in derision but somebody pointed out that Europeans would likely fare similarly poorly on a map of American states. Fair enough.

(7,699 posts)it took me awhile at first to remember Nebraska. Does anything ever hit the news
from Nebraska?
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)I forgot Delaware last time, and before that Maryland.
I've driven through Delaware but have no recollection of it, nor ever hear anything about it Even the name doesn't look right for a statename of you stare it long enough.
DebJ
(7,699 posts)Maryland most of my life, then moved to Pa, and as a child, we camped throughout the south.
If you lived in Maryland, you went to the beach, and on the way to OC are the signs for Rehoboth Beach in Delaware. And if you go there, you pay no sales tax.
Dad was born in New Orleans, Mom in DC, husband in Brooklyn but lived in Jersey.
I do Ancestry research. Dad's family goes back to Maine, and I read two fantastic books by Alan Taylor on early Maine. Vermont is Howard Dean. New Hampshire is the first primary state. Massachusetts is the Kennedys, and I met/introduced Ted. Connecticut is Lieberman the a**. My ex husband lived in Rhode Island awhile and my son threw a fit because he wanted to move there with his Dad. Pa the first home of our nation. New York is well New York and I've been to NYC, and Syracuse, and Niagra Falls. My sister moved to North Carolina recently, and I've been to Myrtle Beach, where my first dad-in-law passed away. So of course South Carolina comes next. Florida ugh Bush-Gore. Louisiana my Dad's home, right next to Mississippi where my son-in-law freuently goes on business, and the center of poverty in my mind in the USA. Georgia I went to Atlanta at 12 and saw a gorilla wait quietly while a crowd gathered about, then he flung his poo on everyone (no glass in those days, and good for him!). Alabama is just kinda stuck there. Texas is Texas, with the pot handle of Oklahoma up top and I just watched a special on the Dust Bowl. Hubby went to college in Kansas at the former St Mary's of the Plains, with fewer students than my high school graduating class alone. Ohio I drove through as a child on the way to Kelloggs factory in Michigan; Ohio smelled like cow manure in the hot August heat in the station wagon with no air and six of us crammed inside. Another sister moved to Illinois recently, Quincy, just up the Mississippi from St. Louis, Missouri, which I visited at 19 and went up in the arch. I once worked with a girl from Terre Haute, Indiana, and she said the most remarkable thing about it was that everyone who lived there moved away and never came back. Ohio...sheesh, everyone on DU knows Ohio! Washington is Microsoft and Starbucks, and my daughter's mom-in-law lives in Oregon. No one could miss California. I could never remember what came between California and Texas, until when I was trying to remember for a test in college, i kept saying jeez i just CANT remember it, and then started to laugh: California Arizona New Mexico Texas...C A N T, right up to Daddy's home state of Louisiana. Idaho was always pictured on big potato sacks when i was a child; I learned that one before age 8 most likely. Nevada is the den of sin. Utah is lilly white Mormons. Wyoming is home to Dick Cheney and where my ex-husband picked up his third wife. Colorado is where my daughter's very nice, ultra liberal, owns nothing on purpose brother in law lives. My Aunt raised her family in North Dakota, right below is South Dakota of course. My sister who is in NC today just moved from Wisconsin, where I visited her, and we went to the close-by Mall of American in St. Paul, Minnesota ... I HATE shopping and after a 24 hour train ride that was the last thing I wanted to do, but Mom wanted to go... Did I list Iowa yet, the first caucus state? I think that pretty much just leaves Nebraska and Arkansas...add AR to Kansas...and Nebraska is just a big blank i have to recall. Either I've been there, or it is big in politics, or family lives there or comes from there. Alaska (Palin) and Hawaii are off the map. Montana Big Sky Country is where my high school best friend's Mom was from. My parents retired in WV and my daughter lives in Va. I dated a man for 17 stupid years from Tennessee, who said that even in the 1990s if a black man walked on the sidewalk you were on, it was okay there to shoot him. Kentucky right above...didn't Lincoln live there?
Ron Obvious
(6,261 posts)I just visualise the map from left to right, up to down. All those big states in the west are easy, but I have a hard time visualising the puzzle pieces in and around new England, even though I lived in Massachusetts for a few years.
At least I'm now well aware...
The first state was Delaware....
I won't forget it again.

The ONLY reason I got Estonia right is because I knew Croatia had a coastline around there.
if that makes any sense.

(6,261 posts)Those of us who follow international soccer know Andorra as one of several dwarf states (like San Marino, Liechtenstein & the Faroer Islands) that compete in all European qualifiers and usually loses something 11-0.
Nobody likes those kinds of games. At least Vatican City doesn't send a team yet.
