Well, I talked to my cardiologist today...

He is not only very smart, but he knows how to listen. He is also a lovely person with a warm sense of humor. I picked him out of all the cardiologists I knew back when I was working in the hospital, and I have never regretted it.

So, today I had another shorter episode of irregular heartbeats along with some near-fainting sensations. I was at home, and alone. And I was scared. So, I called his office.

I talked to his nurse, and explained how this was nearly a repeat of what had happened Saturday, and that I wanted to talk to him.

A little over an hour later, he called me back. I gave him the scoop.

He told me he wants to check my blood levels of various drugs and chemicals, and he also wants me monitored on a 24-hour Holter Monitor. I've done those before and they're easy.

So tomorrow I get some fasting blood work done, and the monitor glued to me for 24 hours.

Then we'll see what to do next.

Thank you all for being here for me...You are my electronic family!

....but I have a lot of experience with arrythmia. What changed my life was taking magnesium, potassium, and CoQ10. Might want to ask for Kcl and mag levels in that blood work. Some meds deplete those, even some OTC meds.

Just a thought.

I've been putting off blood work cause a 12 hour fast is difficult for a diabetic.

Yikes Peg! Those monitors are weird, my husband wore one on his head for 24 hours.

I wish you better news about what is causing you to have al these scares.

These monitors go on the chest; no problem for me...

And I won't be fasting for 12 hours. It'll be closer to 9 hours. I can do it, though it's not fun. I'm taking some yogurt with me to eat as soon as my blood's drawn!

Thanks for your good wishes!

Hi,
I had one of those monitor things on for a day because I was feeling like my heart was racing all day long. Oddly enough it was not, it was all in my mind, strange sensation. However, I understand yours is something physical. I hope all the tests come back good and whatever they discover or don't that you will get back to feeling normal.

Has any of this inspired any poems?

Peace

... arrhythmia and near-fainting spells on walking last week. Combination of not
enough fluids and too much diuretic (for the most part) that caused dehydration.
.
They've got me balanced out again and I hope to go home tomorrow.
.
My doctors are also good listeners. I had one who was not (actually she was a
nurse-practicioner) and she was OUTTA HERE before our 3rd appointment.

You definitely sound like you're on top of YOUR part of the equation.

for symptoms like you're describing. We'll be starting from scratch and I haven't met him yet but he is highly recommended.

Thankfully I have excellent insurance from my employer. Wish 50 million other Americans could say the same.

Anyway, I think we'll both be fine once our physicians get a handle on it.

Once again, Best Wishes.

Lots of people have transient things like atrial fibrillation with perfectly fine hearts except for a little glitch in the electrical system. I would ask him for a 30 day Holter monitor. Otherwise it's hard to catch. Afib can be a nuisance but I don't think anyone falls over dead from it. There are meds for it also.

I know it's scary, but it's usually less urgent than it feels. I had bypass surgery at the age of 38, in 1991. If you'd like to communicate with me, I'd be delighted. There's no need to feel isolated with your problem when there are so many of us with the same problem. Live proud!

All I say is look it in the face and say "you ain't beatin' me."

And then talk to the doc about how to make that reality. Do it to it! And see you on the flip side of your appointment.

Tue Apr 16, 2013, 07:49 PM

I saw mine last when I turned 60 (12 years ago).
A close physician friend told me I needed to get a 'baseline' reading of my heart function for later reference.

I went in for the 'full Monty'.
Treadmill EKG, resting EKG, etc...etc...

I saw three or four nurses.
Each one asked me "What are your symptoms? Chest pain? Shortness of breath?"
And I told 'em all "No! I have no symptoms. I'm just here to get the tests done for comparison later, IF I have a problem."
And I'm still smoking a pack a day and pounding down the Scotch.
Go figure.

Sorry you're having a problem.
Not to worry.
Medical science is amazing now.

All the best,
trof

I appreciate your input.

I'm amazed that you're smoking a pack a day, without symptoms! Lucky you...

I suspect I'll have answers in a few days, after my doc has analyzed the EKG I'm producing now on the Holter monitor, and after my lab results come back.

And then we'll know what to do, and it'll get done.
