Rented a movie last night called "Courageous". Was a christan movie about policing, and connecting

with you children. I don't know how the god played in there, except that the one character who was not religious was a loser. Another character, who was suddenly unemployed, started praying and jobs started falling into his lap. Then they started painting the black characters in broad brush strokes. I turned it off. And I wondered if there should not be a warning somewhere on the dvd box that it would be right wing propaganda. There was no mention of god anywhere on box. And I realize it doesn't say 'this is left wing propaganda' anywhere on leftish films. But I bet you get a description of the main themes of a Michael More film are included with the dvd.

Always golden, always perfect, always corny and unflattering.

Fireproof was about being good to your partner. The new one is about being a good father and role model for your kids. Seems like they are both good ideas, regardless of you politics.

the black characters were ghetto. Even the black policeman had a father who fathered 6 kids with three different women. I thought to myself - while you are teaching people here about loving their kids and loving god it would be nice if you taught them to love african americans, in all their incarnations, too.

The black father was one of the best characters in the movie. Again, not to offend, but I think your seeing racism where they are trying to depict realism. Is it racist when Spike Lee depicts black people as "ghetto"? We may not agree on this, I understand.

was trying to appeal to people actually living in the ghetto. Trying to universally teach many groups to love themselves through god, if that is how they roll, and love love love their children is a good thing. But that is a bit more than can be accomplished in one film. I did give it a try. But they were more over the top than the Wire. And the Wire was cops and drug dealers. If you want to fight the cycle of neglect and struggle in specific neighbourhoods in the USA, do it. But do it all the way. Make the lesson subtler and simpler. I watched a movie about being poor and living with aids in South africa last night called "Life Above All". It was fantastic. All black characters, all details of the struggle of being poor, with a wonderful uplifting message at the end. When you paint with broad brushstrokes and leave out the details, the struggle we all share of being human, and the dignity, you end up with a lack of understanding of the characters in the movie. This is what I objected to: broad brushstrokes.

Sounds like they actually have good messages all around even if one is not religious but then play up the religious stuff. It's actually a good business model since they have pretty low budgets but the fundies eat them right up so they pay back exponentially. This one grossed about $32 million in theaters which isn't a whole lot but only cost $2 million to produce, plus you know the DVDs will sell well because many churches will want to have showings...personally as a Christian I've always found Pulp Fiction more of a Christian movie.

Had one a those big cardboard display racks. Said "From the Makers of 'Fireproof'.", and that told me all I wanted to know. The guys on the posters, are they supposed to cops or something? I ask because they don't look like cops, they're in khaki, and around these parts, all the cops wear black "tactical" gear and more shit on their belts than 5 Batmans and sap gloves.
