The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support ForumsOk, here is your chance to come clean; who do you have on ignore and why.
this is an offshoot of this very interesting and entertaining discussion:
http://www.democraticunderground.com/10022863806
I'll start. Much to my surprise, I am not ignored by anyone at the time of this post. I don't expect that to last long because of the nature of this thread, but so be it.
I am not using the ignore feature on anyone currently. I did use ignore during the 2008 primaries because I did find some people quite ignore worthy, but they were all paroled once the candidate was determined and primary season was over. I for some reason take pride in not having to ignore anyone, and aside from some occasional snark, I try to be civil.
Ok everyone, I am not totally sure what I am getting myself into here, but it's time to ask - who are you ignoring?

Someday, someone will take offense at something you said, and then you'll be on ignore. It most likely will happen eventually.
We have opinions and not everyone will like them, or us.

(10,000 posts)15 ignore me, and I have 15 on ignore. I am 90% sure I know who two of the posters ignoring me are.
I used to have a no-ignore policy. Then came Meta. Now that Meta is done, I may reconsider about 4/5 of my ignore list.
If we named names, what would we hope to gain? Dialog? Closure? Agreement?
BainsBane
(53,066 posts)I just don't want to have a post hidden. I suppose the point is to find out who has you on ignore. Someone told me today they just took me off ignore. I myself added two more today. I generally reserve ignore for people who prefer personal attacks to substantive conversation.
OmahaBlueDog
(10,000 posts)Perhaps we could give clever clues?
BainsBane
(53,066 posts)When I first joined, I resisted ignore for a long time. But you may recall Meta got pretty heated, and I accumulated some enemies, particularly on issues relating to sexism. (hint hint). I had quite a sizable ignore list for a while. It was probably close to 20 at one point. It made things awkward because I couldn't see responses in subthreads. So I cleared out my list except for two members I'd recently battled with (Islamophobes). Now, I've been making a concerted effort to be much more agreeable personally, but that doesn't mean I believe any less strongly in my views, and I'm not afraid to state them. Some members, however, resent strongly the fact I am on DU and do everything in their power to point out what a reprehensible human being they think I am. I just added one back right now. The hint is he hijacked a very recent thread of mine in GD. So basically I've hidden people for nasty personal attacks or Islamophobia. Throw in some sexists and rape apologists, and that's my list.
Your turn.
OmahaBlueDog
(10,000 posts)Many posters in Meta became flaming pains in the backside, and I just ceased wanting to deal with them. Ditto the multitude of HoF squabbles that spilled into Meta. Meta is the source of 90% of my ignore list. Not because of attacks on me, per se (As OmahaBlueDog, I'm sometimes amazed I don't have 100 people ignoring me here), but because I just got sick of reading the same insufferable posts every day.
BainsBane
(53,066 posts)told me not to read his posts anymore, so that was an ignore by request.
uppityperson
(115,679 posts)Being on MIRT, it gave me a way to mark someone to check out along the way. So, I've a bunch on mail ignore. I put 1 person on ignore today to take a break from her for a bit, but imagine I'll take her off soon.
BainsBane
(53,066 posts)You won't receive the mail. Isn't that a problem when you're on MIRT? I think they need to give you all a better way to track people.
uppityperson
(115,679 posts)get the nasty death threat. Most those on my mail ignore I am fine not getting mail from. There are ways to track people in MIRT, it is just what I used in addition since we don't have the buddy list thing anymore.

(80,708 posts)Actually, yeah, you can PM me- or any other current MIRT member- if you spot someone, er, questionable.
Bear in mind what MIRT does and doesn't do- namely, MIRT basically deals with people who just showed up. Folks -and lord knows everyone who hangs out here long term gets this urge- who have signed up thinking they could axe their long-time DU nemeses have been sadly disappointed.
BainsBane

(80,708 posts)Pretty much everyone here I've disagreed with over something, at some point.
But if you're having problems with someone, you can always take it to admin. Or just ask 'em to lay off.
BainsBane
(53,066 posts)the people in question, and I don't think the administrators care (other than hiding one signature line). So I'm back to ignore. The thing is I've been trying much harder to get along with people. I haven't had a thread hidden in 51 days, but some people hold on to grudges.

(80,708 posts)And I didn't mean to sound unsympathetic, I know you had a crap weekend. I hope the car damage isn't too bad.
BainsBane
(53,066 posts)The car is running so the damage appears to be just cosmetic. My dad cautioned me to be sure to get it fixed because water and salt will get in the bullet holes and rust the body. The claims agent comes to look at it tomorrow.
I have to say I've enjoyed getting to know you a bit and putting our disagreements in the past. I appreciate your willingness to do that
Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)Your Dad is right--- salt eats cars like nobody's business. At least we're heading into summer, now.
One thing we don't have to worry about so much here, although on the rare occasions it actually does snow, everyone freaks out and no one knows what to do.

(11,243 posts)I ignore people who post often, but something about either the topics or the format they choose to post in is annoying. Also, I ignore people who are very rude. I guess I should alert, but I hate the drama that evolves around that. I am fine with disagreeing, even vehemently, on a topic and won't ignore based on that so long as the other poster is using logical arguments and following board guidelines.

BainsBane
(53,066 posts)and a subthread started by someone on your ignore list doesn't appear. If someone you have on ignore responds to one of your posts, your my post tab still lights up, but when you click on the number it says you have the person on ignore.

(47,534 posts)could not care less.
I've always viewed DU as a place for like minded (more or less) individuals who exchange ideas and ask questions and to even change one's mind.
If I disagree with someone, I'd rather post my opinion. If I decided that such a debate is a lost cause, I just stopped reading.
Granted, I used to spend a lot more time here reading and caring about a lot more topics. Not anymore. Life is getting too short.

(54,436 posts)I don't even know how to do it--or why I would bother to do it. I can ignore a post or a poster without doing so mechanically, and besides, you never know when even someone you consider a dork might post something interesting.

Warren DeMontague
(80,708 posts)of course, this being the lounge, no one is going to actually admit to anyone that they really have on ignore.
