Why Toothpaste Makes Orange Juice Taste Bad - inquiring minds, and all that ...

Apparently, the sodium lauryl sulfate that helps the toothpaste create suds in your mouth also messes with your taste receptors. Or, at least, that is the “most widely accepted explanation,” according to this video. Now I’m off to look up the other theories.

Why are all (as far as I can tell) toothpastes flavored with that mint extract that always leaves my tongue and palate feeling like I was brushing with a habanero pepper?

Proponents claim that peppermint oil is antibacterial or antibiotic when used internally or on the skin. According to a 2006 article by D. L. McKay and J. B. Blumberg in "Phytotherapy Research," peppermint tea and peppermint oil have "significant antimicrobial and antiviral activities, strong antioxidant and antitumor actions, and some antiallergenic potential." A report by S. Pattnaik, et al, published in "Microbios" in 1996 says peppermint oil and nine other herbal oils were tested for antibacterial activity against 22 bacteria and 12 fungi. Lemongrass, eucalyptus, peppermint and orange oils were effective against all 22 bacterial strains and eucalyptus and peppermint oils were effective against 11 fungi. S. Shapiro, A. Meier and B. Guggenheim, authors of a Swiss study reported in the August 1994 edition of "Oral Microbiology and Immunology," agreed, reporting that tree oil, peppermint oil and sage oil are effective against oral bacteria

Right after you've finished eating an artichoke? As an adult, I don't drink all that much milk, but it was one of the more baffling experiences of my childhood.

And we drank milk with our dinner - well, a 2%/powdered milk mix (too poor for the real stuff).
There is a slight copper-metallic/grassy aftertaste to steamed artichokes; perhaps that's what's causing you to experiance an "off taste".
