I have to say, I usually check them out and then don't take the time to dig into them much.

Made fun reading and if one actually followed the instructions to the letter you could completely rebuild a VW engine with no prior experience with engines.

(3,065 posts)I read that book and did rebuild a VW engine. It even gave you tips on how to limp back to a shop with no more than duct tape and bailing wire.

(2,888 posts)they've covered so many topics, frankly, I wouldn't be surprised if they're running out and come out with a book literally titled "Such and Such for Dummies."

... for years to learn and, while reading that book, I learned how to juggle tentatively in 15 minutes.

Soon, I was so "confident" that my GF refused to walk near me in the produce section at the grocery
store.

Honest, I thought I was ready to juggle 3 honeydew melons without dropping them all.

Not so.

(18,219 posts)One of the first Dummie books was Car Repair for Dummies, and I got it. I had to laugh at the beginning, since the first chapter was "this is a wrench" and "this is a screwdriver", with pictures. Well, I wasn't THAT dumb, but it was good that they got down to real basics. And I changed my own oil with the step-by-step instructions without ever having seen anyone change oil before. Rewarding!

(12,296 posts)... I was set to interview for a Project Manager gig (a promotion) and a couple evenings prior, I got "Project Mgmt for Dummies" and crash memorized as much of the official terminology as I could. The company I worked for followed the process but didn't use all the fancy-shmancy terms so I couldn't really relate what we did to the rest of the corporate/IT world.
One of the first questions the interviewer asked me was about the '5 phases of project management' which I hadn't specifically heard of 'til I read that book. Thanks to it, I was able to tick them off & give examples of how my present company handled them.
After the interview, he cancelled all the other candidates and 2 days later I had an offer.
So, yeah.

(50,559 posts)Dan Gookin, who gets a piece of every Dummies book sold, is a teabagger who serves as an obstructionist on the Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, city council. He was elected in 2011 and he'll probably be gone in 2015 because on Monday night he voted aye on the city's new antidiscrimination statute...and the local Taliban say they're going to go after anyone who voted for it.
(On edit...2015, we have four-year terms...)

(14,120 posts)I spent a lot of money on books and paying a Math major to tutor me. Just to find the class I was really dreading, College Math 101, was stuff I learned in 4th. grade.
Oh well, At least I was able to not let that math class drop my GPA. I stayed up there to keep in Phi Eta Sigma!
Thank You "For Dummies"!
