the oldest kid got stung by a scorpion last night and even the locals at work were so awed they sent him home from work early - and they work at a fertilizer/explosives plant! wimps this is the same young man who one time in kindergarten, wore a scorpion in his shoe all day.

(60,022 posts)each of our chocolate labs have been bitten over the past few years. Not easy to see curled up on the grass at the side of the road. Yep - it's that time!

(55,025 posts)it was dark and I was taking the pix blind out of the drivers side window.
I run my dogs with the truck at night (yes I am lazy - but my dogs are in GREAT shape ) and they spotted it first.
None of the current ones have been bit, but we have had a few that survived multiple bites and few that did not.

(32,095 posts)The vast majority of rattlers and cottonmouths I have encountered stay coiled up like that unless you get right in their faces. I have encountered hundreds of them. I have even seen a few that would be in the same spot the next day. The only time I ever had a rattler rattle at me was when I nearly stumbled on it. Damn good thing I saw it. It was a five foot Eastern canebrake. Nearly scared the crap out of me. Its head was almost as big as my fist.

(60,010 posts)Our rattlers and the rat snakes both get to 6 feet easily, and when I see one stretched out on the path enjoying the sun,
I do not get close enough to decipher the subtle differences in coloring.
Except the black rat snakes..they are easy to spot.
and damned if there are not green ones that like to hang down from tree branches.
Glad the heat forces me indoors in the summer.
