(6,154 posts)I'm trying to kick that habit. We don't buy much if any anymore and I'm now mostly switched over to water but I don't actually get as much liquid now as I used to because I just don't like water as much

(6,154 posts)I prefer regular water to that. One thing I did try for a while was club soda instead of regular water which I liked for a little while.

(58,726 posts)Sodas now have a strong diuretic affect on me. After a single can of pop, I find myself running to the pissoir in just a few minutes.
Now I drink mostly water. Almost no sodas at all.
I feel better for it.
And no, I don't do 'flavored' water. Never understood the concept.

my doc put me on 1 gal a day - but i can only drink that much about once or twice a week. it's challenging - it has made a positive difference with relation to chronic fibromyalgia pain and degenerative arthritis pain!
have your read the book "you're not sick, you're thirst"? i just heard about it.

"straight" water, of any kind upsets my guts - coffee, pop, beer, juices, soups with water - seems to be ok.
But offer me a glass of water, unless I'm severely thirsty on a hot day, and no other beverage available - it'll be "no thanks"
Body told me so.

(6,581 posts)So, if you weigh 150 lbs, you should drink a minimum of 75 ounces daily.
Populist_Prole
(5,364 posts)I'd say a fairly reliable average of 70-80 ounces/day.

(28,394 posts)but I crunch on ice cubes all day. Probably about 3 trays a day, however much that is. That is interesting that it is supposed to help with arthritis though.

(55,025 posts)I got anemic a couple years ago (unbelievable with how much red meat I eat, but it was related to female problems and not diet)
I thought I might be going diabetic, I was so fatigued and retaining water and crunching ice like an insane person. Doc put me on iron (and we addressed the main problem) and in a couple days I no longer felt like crunching ice. it was wierd how fast it worked.
femmocrat
(28,394 posts)I got in the habit of eating them when I was anemic. I still like them though! LOL Thanks for your reply.

I'm on a fluid-restriction of 1300 ml here in the rehab center -- and I guard each and every
one of those precious milliliters. Not wasting it on water (they even try to bring me water
with which to take my medication -- 100 ml -- to which I (nicely) say, "Hells naw" . I drink
various juices and diet Shasta Lemon-Lime (the only diet soda they have here).
.
They even charge against that allowance for things like soup, jello and ice cream.

I've become very anal about my fluid intake.

(16,245 posts)I'd rather drink other things.
If I drank what they say to drink, I'd be in the bathroom all day. Not really an option for anyone.
I think the need is less than is claimed in the media. 8 8-ounce glasses? No way in hell.

(9,527 posts)But in the summer it goes up to 8 to 10 including gatorade because I sweat to the point that a shirt worn during exercise will need to hang for 2 days to dry.
I've cut severely back of my soda intake and I'm trying to cut back on the gatorade due to the extra sugar, but as I said I tend to sweat a lot and I try to work out extra hard when it's hot because it's great for pushing yourself.
