Why did you buy that? I keep hearing awful things about it, and so my new laptop has Win 7. Much easier!

I had to look online to get it, but it is available...

I pay attention - too many complaints about Win 8.

Should be here any day now - my 7 year old Dell Latitude is gettin' tired.

Gonna give it a well deserved rest.

Served well tho (win XP professional)

I remember reading about it, have no clue where to get them, maybe a search will help.

TONS of complaints about Windows 8, for sure.

Microsoft is issuing a patch that I believe will convert your OS to a Win 7-like environment. they are abandoning the Win 8 platform thereafter, so you only have a few more months of this.

First thing I install on a Win 8 box is Classic Shell. It makes it a usable OS. Win 8 has many things to like, but the Metro Interface is not one of them. Before you install Classic Shell make sure you read about all the options available, then choose the ones you want.

You can still choose the WinXP interface, but they have added the Win7 interface for Win 8 users

I used to hate Metro, but it's really not as bad as it seems once you get used to it, even on a standard laptop. It actually has its uses.

I still don't quite get the point of it being launched as a PC OS, though...

Once updates are installed, you are given a 15 minute and then a 5 minute warning and then your computer will restart, and there seems to be no way for you to stop it.

Follow Hobbit's advice and download a start bar replacement. It reduces the frustration level to win 7. I've gone a whole week now without seeing that fooking tablet crap.

The Mac OS system is simple to use. I have had a Mac Mini since 2009 and I love it. I had PCs with Windows in the past and the Mac OS is far superior.

Don't know what I'm going to do when there are no more of those.

I'm still on Firefox 3.

Suck eggs, developers who change user interfaces for no good reason.

20. I bought a Gateway laptop with Windows 8 last month
Sat Jul 6, 2013, 09:35 PM
Jul 2013

and I'm still trying to get used to it. I can't seem to find anything on it. I'm annoyed that Windows is no longer providing free games in their software. And their paint shop is crap; you can't go down to the single pixel size to work one pixel at a time.

I wanted Windows 7 but the shop said it was impossible to find. Then I told the store (Fry's Electronics, a megastore in southern California) that I'd buy it if their repair shop could install Ubuntu on it. They said 'no problem', as it's free to download from the web. Then I waited 10 days while the store played with it. After three so-called experts tried to install Ububtu alongside Windows 8, they gave up. They said it was supposedly possible but this particular version of Windows 8 wouldn't allow it. So now I'm taking an old broken laptop to be fixed and I'll have Windows wiped out and Ubuntu installed and kiss Windows 'good-bye' forever and also say so long to having to pay for expensive anti-virus software that doesn't work (my Gateway is one month old with McAfee on it and I nonetheless already have viruses that are making my mouse go crazy, freezing and then unfreezing constantly).

but I had already recently paid quite a sum for two years worth of McAfee on my previous Gateway that broke (the power connection shorted out). I asked McAfee to transfer my subscription to my new Gateway and they did it online, but in accessing my computer, they wiped out my Norton. I've read that Ubuntu never has problems with viruses.

I bought a new HP lappie that came with W8. I hated it so much that I spent $200 on a Win7 disc and installed Win7.
