We traveled down to Southeast Alaska the last two weeks of May, by road 800 miles to Haines and then ferry to Juneau and Sitka. We had gorgeous weather, beautiful scenery and lots of wildlife. I've been so busy with our home remodel and numerous political responsibilities, but I finally got some shots of the trip up at my website here: http://northernvisions.smugmug.com/Vacation/Southeast-Alaska/30371194_SgdM4F#!i=2616713183&k=vQVxSSV Sit back and enjoy a slide show and forget the world's worries for a few minutes.

Ruins of the Treadwell Mine complex on Douglas Island near Juneau
Mendenhall Glacier and waterfall near Juneau

(34,115 posts)Thank you. I love Alaska. We went once, were on one of those horrid tours complete with a cruise (oh NEVER again) but we got off and away as many times as we could and rented a car and drove as much as we could. It is a beautiful state, a huge and beautiful state. We have always wanted to go back there.
Can't wait to see your photos. Thanks, it will make me smile I am sure. <---see, smiling already!

(46,436 posts)if you want to really enjoy that inside passage, take the ferries, the Alaska Marine Highway System. They travel the exact same route as the cruisers for a tiny fraction of the cost, you get to hang out with real Alaskans, there's food, drinks, you can rent a cabin if you want, and you can drive your own car on if you wish (as we did) so that you have your own transportation when you debark. You can follow your own schedule. It's just better all the way around.

(34,115 posts)I have only enjoyed one tour and that was in Russia and it was during a kinda weird time and there was no way there were enough who spoke English and we did not speak Russian.
We broke away and went up to Chena Hot Springs and saw so much on that little excursion. Instead of taking this little boat excursion (that sounded like something from Disney Land) that ended with Susan Butcher giving a talk we went by ourselves to see Mary Shields and spent the evening with her and about 10 other people and she gave us cookies and cocoa . It was wonderful. The cruise sucked. We will do it your way next time. We were warned against going any farther than Cheno Springs because of the roads. I would love to travel up to Barrow.
More than half way through your photos, they are wonderful. Going back for more and thanks so much.

(46,436 posts)when we were up in Fairbanks. It was quite a drive. Circle flooded really bad this year when the Yukon River broke up, as did Gulkana, to the point where they were declared federal disaster areas. I couldn't believe the amount of water up there around Tok as we were coming back. All the rivers were over their banks and the overflow was just a few inches from the road.
