I saw Crimes and Misdemeanors for the first time on HBO a couple of years ago. My cable guide had it listed at 4 stars so I was excited to see it. With about 10 or so minutes left in the film I said to myself, "Yeah, this is a good movie but I'd give 3 stars at the most." Then I saw the ending and I was like "Ohh, there's the 4th star." It was really good.

Kinda creepy that Woody offed an inconvenient woman and let the guy get away with it in TWO flicks (although it was very clever in Match Point). That with the icky Soon Yi stuff in his personal life gives me way too much insight in how he perceives women: He only seems to be able to deal with them if he's their Svengali. But despite it all, I think most of his films are genius and will easily be persuaded to see anything he's directed.

I rationalize the whole killing them off thing as something maybe his therapist told him to do ***in a fantasy*** so he never crosses a line. I'm Jewish, too, and "Neurosis R Us"!

The surprise ending changes everything. See it!

But that "bloopers" bit at the end just makes an amazing film that much better. I hear Sellars was a complete asshole, but sadly so many geniuses are. And this film is a great legacy.

I was expecting another dumb Hollywood ending. They surprised me by going with an intelligent comment on international politics.

I saw this movie sitting on the grass at an athletic field on Clark Air Base, Philippines, in 1973. The ending was awesome (or it could have just been the "local dirt&quot .

this one was the first movie I ever for being cried being happy.

And the ending has perfect continuity, once you realize Harold had never gone through with any of his "Suicide" attempts. And Maude told him to "L-I-V-E" so he's carrying out her wish.

Gawd, when I'm old (er) I hope I'm Maude and not some tight-lipped, reactionary biddy. I'm working hard every day to achieve that dream!

There's really not a whole lot of justice in that movie, so you're kind of depressed at the end. But there's a wonderful moment when the drug dealer is celebrating his mistrial and Don Cheadle (a DEA agent whose partner was collateral damage in a hit ordered by the same dealer) crashes the party and confronts the dealer about the death of his partner.

As the dealer's security are tossing Cheadle, there's a struggle and he uses the distraction to plant a bug on the dealer's desk. He walks away in a huff, but there's this moment where he gives a little grin. Then you realize the whole point of the display wasn't to vent his emotions, but to use that as a distraction to plant a listening device.

It's a small moment, but it's clever.

Kay walking out of Michael's office, after just having been assured differently, only to see the door closing behind her and Michael assuming the position of Godfather.

Those who have seen it I'm sure will agree.

Both iconic!

I liked the ending.

No matter how many times I see them, they never fail to move me.

And the original Miracle on 34th Street -- when Susan gets her house.

It was the first movie I remember not being able to guess the ending.

While this is a great movie, the ending is incredible.

Modine and Cage are both patients in a mental institution; Modine (Birdy) is deeply troubled and suicidal but seems to get better through the course of the story, in part due to his friendship with Cage. At the end, it seems as though Modine's bird-obsessed character has relapsed and committed suicide, trying to fly by jumping off a building. As an anguished Cage rushes to the edge where Birdy has jumped from, he sees there's a landing just below, and Birdy is alive and fine. Seeing Cage's tear-streaked face, Birdy looks up and says, "What??"

After a movie with zero romance or even sexual tension, the ending was just so damned sweet. My daughter and I were both tearing up and looking at one another like "What the hell? Am I losing my mind or was that one of the saddest romantic moments ever?"
