It'll be OK.

Have you ever turned a faucet to a point where the thing vibrates and makes a humming/squeeee sound?

This is probably that.

Is it going on for hours or just a few seconds or minutes at a time?

And probably being wasted, or some part of the system needs repair.

I would consider calling the owner, super, or other responsible party, or look about for open taps, maybe outside.

I was told that was because there is air in the pipes. I haven't worried about it because they have done it for a few years now.

Was sitting on the kitchen shelf cause you can never have too many smoke alarms. I undid the battery and threw it out. Now I'm down to only two smoke alarms.

Smoke alarm may still be fine.

Try putting a new battery in it.

When I first moved into my new place, was a cool night so lit a fire

Smoke alarm started "chirping" -

Changed the battery, did a test - it's fine now.
