The DU Lounge
Related: Culture Forums, Support Forumsfor the hell of it - these are the top rated beers at Ratebeer.com. Who has tried some?
http://www.ratebeer.com/advbeersearch.phpThese all score 100 points (I chopped it off there - there are lots of 99.95s too!).
Of all of these, I've manged to try just two - the Rochefort Trappiste 10 (which is expensive, complex, and impressive...but I don't reach for Belgian beer very often), and Bells Expedition (which is just fantastic - one of our favorites).
I'd love to find the Cigar City beers, but they don't make it to the Raleigh area (at least as far as I've found).

(38,313 posts)We were in Barstow, California. At the Motel 6. I think Motel 6 was still advertising their frugal black and white televisions. Gasoline was much less than a dollar a gallon. I could also make eight dollars an hour loading trucks or pouring concrete without hardly trying. But I don't quite remember that day in Barstow... because of the Old Milwaukee. I'm not certain we slept in the motel. At some point we were in the dry Mojave riverbed sitting around a campfire with... who? But there was free coffee in the motel's lobby in the morning, and showers afterwards, so I guess we got our money's worth.

(18,318 posts)"premium" versions of the usual suspects. I have a new-found respect for 16 oz. Lone Star which escaped that purgatory. But I prefer regional/local Texas beer from Real Ale, Independence, Live Oak, Austin Beer, St. Arnold's, etc.
Every year Real Ale (Blanco, TX) has a beer fest where you can drink up to four free beers, including new stuff which is not yet on the market. This event (last April) drew in 3,000, including many start-ups & regional small brewers. A "working" vacation!

Given a six by 6 oz sampler, I found their India Pale Ale delightful, and I don't even drink beer!
Are they on the list of tested tasted beers?
I doubt it.

(50,557 posts)We know PBR, Coors, Bud Light etc. are not quality beers, but the people who made those lists would despise the best pilsener in the world - simply because pils is not the kind of beer they like.

(14,738 posts)Trouble is, imperial stouts are the sort of thing I only drink once every so often, and not when the weather is very hot as it is right now.
I have to admit that if I were to make up a list of top beers I'd be choosing a lot more then imperial stouts. For one thing, a nice golden ale on a summers day can be just as wonderful.
Also, pilsners may be a tad unfashionable with US beer geeks, but over here it's mild and bitter that ratebeer fanboys always overlook, which is a shame as there are some wonderful bitters and milds out there. The established beers and beer styles tend to be passed over by ratebeer fanboys in favour of whatever is the new thing.

(53,339 posts)The best craft beer I ever had was from some guy I worked with once who made it in his bathtub and gave it as holiday gifts. He put it in Grolsch bottles.
Now THAT was a beer!

(9,077 posts)KBS, CBS, Pliny the Elder, Bourbon County Stout. the 3 Fonteinens, Trappist 10 & Bell's Expedition.
I have some KBS, Bourbon County & Expedition cellaring for later sampling & reviewing.
Just a note, several of them are available only at the brewery, The Dark Lord's on only one day (Dark Lord Day), and you need a reservation and a ticket. Westy 12 is another. Several are only available on cask, Pliny the younger in particular. Cask only, for two weeks only, no bottles ever.

(12,132 posts)and I'd agree they are pretty great. I've seen some of the others at my good beer store and I have them on my list.

(29,149 posts)It was really good. Not the best beer I've ever had, I don't think--at least, not the one I'd pick if I had to pick an endless supply of one and only one for a deserted island--but a very nice celebration beer.
I'll have to give the Bell's Expedition a try sometime. Generally I've found Bell's just kind of okay. Never found one that I wouldn't want to have again, but also never found one that really blew me away, either.

(38,313 posts)But there's no shortage of good local beers these days. Our own local breweries make some excellent stuff.
I'm a terrible beer critic. There's excellent, there's good, there's "light" (blech!), and there's undrinkable. It doesn't take much to be "good" on my scale, and undrinkables are rare.
In my entire life I've only run into a few undrinkable brews, some my own, some my friends' and some $2.99 (or less...) six packs at Big Lots and similar outlets.

(10,237 posts)we have crap beers like brew 102 malt like beverage ,our water is famous here .

(38,313 posts)Dregs of the Colorado river and groundwater contaminated by industry, oil and gas wells, not so good...
I remember Brew 102, downtown.
Rumor is they once found the body of a worker who'd drowned in the brew... long after it had been sold and consumed.
Had they known, maybe they could have relabeled it "Vampira" or "Cannibal" and sold it at a premium to bloodsucking film and music producers or real estate developers.

(3,147 posts)I had a sample when it first came in but it was gone by the following week when I had planned to order it. Apparently small batches. My usual is Old Rasputin Stout, Northern California local.

(12,132 posts)I love Old Rasputin (However, North Coast's Pranqster was too much for me. I think it really was a prank. lol)...but I just don't even know how I could let a bourbon barrel aged Rasputin sit for longer than it took me to reach the bottle opener...You has some will power!
HarveyDarkey
(9,077 posts)and you should see what's ahead of it in the queue for review. Just got back from an out of town beer run with another 20 or so. Pranqster is pretty good too, I have yet to be disappointed in North Coast's brews.

(3,220 posts)Love these two. I want to try their Russian stout next.
They're heavy on bitter citrus flavor. If you don't mind bitter (in a good way) beer, you'll love these two.
Looks like I'm going to have to add more to my list of what do try. Bookmarked for later use. Thanx!

(46,179 posts)but I highly recommend Hair of the Dog's Bourbon Fred.
You have to show up in person to drink it. It's worth it.
Another I tried recently and loved, which is not on this list, was Old Chubb Scottish Ale.

(14,738 posts)Way too much emphasis on rare beers and extreme bottled beers.
It also irks me the way some breweries are fawned over on that site (London's Kernel Brewery being a prime example).
Not all good beer is barrel aged imperial stout or double IPA!!!!
NRaleighLiberal
(60,014 posts)I like to read about beers that others love that I have to search for (makes them that much more special) - I've been told it is easier to make great stouts/porters etc - the richness and intensity can cover up faults.
T_i_B
(14,738 posts)That it's easier to brew pale & very hoppy beers as chucking hops at beer apparantly covers up faults as well.
It's interesting to note that the people claiming that dark beer covers up faults prefer pale & hoppy while those who dislike pale n' hoppy beer make that same argument about IPA's.
Oh by the way, porters & stouts don't have to be "intense" to be good. A nice mellow normal strength dark beer can be rather wonderful and indeed often preferable to an over boozy imperial stout.
NRaleighLiberal
(60,014 posts)by! My favorite beers are imperial or double stouts - probably similar to my wine tastes (huge chardonnays, big high alcohol zinfandels).
Nice that there is such a variety - something for all of our tastes!

(14,738 posts)The other one I've had off that list is Goose Island Bourbon County, which didn't float my boat to be honest.
There's quite a lot of Cigar City on that list. The only Cigar City beer I've ever had is Jai Alai, which again didn't do it for me in the same way that it does for ratebeer fanboys.

(10,801 posts)Cigar City Hunahpus Imperial Stout, I'm sure you'd like it. At this moment I'm drinking a Cigar City Hotter Than Helles Lager, much lighter but yummy as well.

(36,439 posts)I'm sticking with my barley sandwich, Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, the genuine benchmark for all pale ales.
