Can anyone identify this fruit / berry?

After just posting about the edible berries here a few mins ago I was reminded of coming across a bunch of bushes along a trail with some very strange fruit on them. Luckily I took a pic while I was there. These are bright red bulbous looking fruit / berries about 2 inches accross.

Anyone ever seen something like this before?

I think that's what they might be, or something in the same family. I don't know about thorns but I'll check the next time I'm along that path. The fruit looks very very similar that's for sure.

There are several species of roses, and some don't have prominent thorns. But, leaves are definitely rose leaves.

I asked in the gardening group and everyone is saying that too. I'll try a small piece of one next time I'm there. Don't want to eat too much just in case

They are used for itching powder, if that tells you anything.

Rose hips have have more Vit C than oranges. Hips makes a nice tea and jelly.

I'm more surprised I was right though. The commercial property next door has loads of these bushes all over their little dirt islands through out the parking lot. I'd never seen them before until moving here. The berry thingies start out as pretty dark pink flowers and when they die these berries show up. In the fall and winter it's just branches which makes me wonder why a commercial property chose to have them all over the place since they're scraggly and ugly bushes that time of year. I've noticed that the birds, bugs and other critters don't eat them. My dog likes to pee on these bushes, and the bunnies like to hide in them when it rains. When the berries grow I'm always looking at them while the dog sniffs and pees wondering what the hell they are and why I've only ever seen them at this one place especially since most of the year they're a really ugly looking bush for a commercial property to want to plant all over the place. They've had them as long as I've lived here though.
