The Great Dismal Swamp Canal/ Lake Drummond Kayak Adventure 2013 (pic heavy)

Here are a few shots I took earlier while kayaking along the Great Dismal Swamp and into Lake Drummond. For those who don't know, this is a swamp in eastern NC/ southern Va. Parts of it were drained and canals were dug to extract timber. In fact, it was first proposed by George Washington in 1784. It lasted until the early 20th century, when competition from other, cheaper forms of transportation ended it as a commercial venture. Now it's a historic site and a wildlife refuge. The tow path is now a bike path.
It's a very cool place.

But I can barely move my arms now. It was the longest I've ever paddled. 10 miles or so.

I don't know if there are gators that far north.

We saw a bald eagle, though. Only the third I have ever seen.

I haven't been to Merchants Millpond yet.
