Today's Food Porn: Fish & Chips

Had a long talk with the cook today. He's a stickler for keeping the fryer oil clean and changed regularly and you can taste it. The Board of Health did a "spot check" recently and gave this place a 99. The reason they lost a point is that they had JUST MADE a batch of mac & cheese (100% made from scratch), which has a HIGH turnover rate, but they hadn't yet put a "use by" date on it.

The fries are crisp and you don't taste oil at all, just potato with the right amount of salt. I tried a piece of the fish (I'd been there with a friend and we'd both split a Philly Cheese Steak and Shrimp Skewers, so we had to make room...)

Batter was light, crisp, fish was "not fishy," delicious, moist, and like the fries, not oily at all. Tomorrow's special is the Buffalo Chicken Sandwich and I'll be taking pics of that too. Stay tuned...

and where's the ketchup for the fries?

Otherwise, the coleslaw looks homemade and yummy.

Two weeks ago I would have ordered this and loved it. Now, the diatitian has other plans (and they suck!).

If you stick with it, after a few months you will look at things you used to eat as poison and genuinely feel that way. And if you eat some if them, your body will react that way. I succumbed to temptation to eat a small piece of homemade blueberry pie a couple if weeks ago that was in the house because I had company, and ... I was so sick the rest of the day, just the worst stomach ache.

So, what is the dietician recommending? Mine got me on ultra low simple carbs, no bread, no sugar etc, lots of non starchy vegetables, a lot of protein and healthy fats. Been really working for me.

...the FB page for this specific restaurant is up to 80 "likes," which is not bad for a relatively short period of time in a really small town.

Fish and chips are among my favorite foods, and definitely one of the highlights of British cuisine.

I don't think it is in existence any longer. But there was one within walking distance from my house when I lived in Miami. The fish and chips were great.

When I was in Bangor, Ireland, there was a fish and chips fast food place next to my hotel. It was late because I had just gotten off the ferry from England and nothing else was open. I got the fish and chips and they were awful, just full of grease.

It was batter dipped cod/pollock. Loved it swimming in malt vinegar.

I had fish and chips in London at a pub just a couple blocks from the British Museum...seemed to have been rolled in cornmeal, it may have been more authentic geographically but I didn't care for it a bit. Never have been tempted to try another F&C in the UK or Ireland.
As I much like British curry.

I got side-tracked into this: A Tandoori chicken taco with garlic and yogurt sauce. With chips.

Fabulous. With Newcastle Brown Ale on draft.

and I got to steal some of my wife's fried cod.

...they also have separate fryers for the fish and fries. So in addition to changing the oil diligently and frying at the right temperature, you get fried food that is tasty, never heavy, and the flavor of the food...not the oil...predominates.
