My grandmother had one. Definitely a Republican dog. Absolutely refused to eat anything but chicken breasts with rice-a-roni on the side, snapped at everyone INCLUDING my grandmother, thought it was better than everyone and everything else.

Grandma sent the dog to live on a farm. This wasn't the old "he went to live on a farm" thing you tell the kids when you had the dog put to sleep, my aunt and uncle and seven children owned a twenty-acre farm on which they grew everything they ate that could be grown on 20 acres in Eastern Washington. Three months after the dog went there, my aunt accidentally ran the fucking thing over with the car, and to her dying day she was convinced grandma thought she ran it over on purpose. (My mom would have.)

Those things are lap dogs par excellence.
They were bred for the express purpose of being sullen companions of Chinese royalty/Imperials.

I can see them being like that.

Unfortunately, the movie wasn't ABOUT the dog, but after seeing the whole movie, I came to the conclusion that the best part of the movie WAS the dog.

Not that anyone was actually going to ask, but the movie was The Wall, a German movie based on a German novel of the same name. It was pointless, absent plot, void of dialogue, but a really great DOG was in it. Oh, and the kitten was cute, too.

I and many others here on DU know that pain. It takes a while till the memories become joyful and the tears less. But we all know the tears never actually go away, there are just more smiles. We all wish they would live as long as we do.
