My daughter took me to see my doctor last Thursday, and X-rays were taken. It seems that I have a badly sprained ankle and a fractured fibula (non-weight bearing leg bone). I still cannot put any weight on it, and because it is my right leg/foot, I cannot drive my car. It still swells terribly in the afternoon, and I soak it in cold water (ice is just too painful). No plaster cast was necessary, and I have ace bandages and an ankle brace to wear. My crutches arrived just in time, and I'm getting around the house OK.
My only co-worker who lives near me (about 12 miles away) is reluctant to give me a ride to work more than "a couple of days", which helps very little. My boss is acting better than I expected, and has given me no grief over my absence from work. I must admit that when I run out of sick time (5 days) and vacation time left (4 days), it's time off without pay for me. Luckily, I have some savings with which to pay my bills. It's not much, just about enough to cover my next mortgage payment. Hopefully by then I'll be back to work, at my desk job where I can sit most of the day. I wanted some time off, but not like this! Take care out there, it's a cruel world sometimes!

Keep it wrapped and elevated as much as you can. That will help.
The world can be cruel...I'm sorry.

(22,845 posts)So sorry to hear about your sprain - I hope it heals quickly.
My daughter sprained her right wrist last night when she tripped on something on the driveway. She's a waitress, so she may not be able to work for a while.
Can anyone get you a tube of arnica? It's an herbal gel that I use for bumps, bruises and back and joint pain. Our supermarket chain in Maryland carries it, but GNC and Vitamin Shoppe also sell it.

(3,414 posts)Sprains are not life-threatening, but they sure are painful. I've never heard of arnica. Is that some sort of plant extract?

(16,245 posts)If you haven't already. It won't pay anything, but it might save your job.

(3,414 posts)Do I file with the HR person at work? I've never done this before. Also, our company works with lawyers and law suits all the time, not FMLA related, but we are all familiar with the procedures. Also, my boss knows I have lawyers in the family.

(4,465 posts)I hurt my ankle pretty badly once but it was a weird injury. I didn't hurt at all when I walked on on it but my ankle was swollen to hell and at certain angles, omg the pain made me cry. It took a long time to heal and to get the full use of it back. I never did go to the Dr. so I have no idea what was actually going on. anyway. It sucked.
How did you hurt yours?

(3,414 posts)That ran right under my feet as I headed for the kitchen. She thinks that every time I go in there, I'm going to open a can of cat food. This time she came galloping out of nowhere just in time to take me out!
